The Rockets has been one of the worst teams in the league in recent years, but it looks like the rebuilding process has finally prevailed. We saw glimpses of it last year with their excellent start, but now they seem to be the real deal.
They rely on their defense, as they are second in opponents' effective field goal percentage (51.8%) and third in points allowed (107.3%). That doesn’t mean they don’t have scoring options; center Alperen Sengun is averaging 19.3 points and 10.4 rebounds, and Jalen Green is averaging 21 points.
The Nuggets aren’t too far removed from being champions, and after an inconsistent season, they are finally playing like it. The Nuggets are playing some of their best ball of the year, winning eight of their last ten games. The offense has flourished, with 120 points in six, and 130 in three of those games.
This shows they are focused on out-scoring their opponents because the defense has vastly regressed from last year, when they were eighth in defensive efficiency (1.096) to 19th (1.108) this year.

The Magic have kept it together despite all the injuries. All of its best players have missed some time, including former No. 1 pick and rookie of the year Paolo Banchero, who just returned after missing two and a half months. The Magic have some solid offensive players but rely on its defense, as it is first in points allowed per game (103.2) and second in defensive efficiency (1.035).
The Bucks are coming off a dominating win over the Kings as they are finally living up to expectations. They were awful to start the year by losing eight of their first ten, but they rallied and have been 18-9 since.
The roster is a fine collection of players, but we know Giannis Antetokounmpo runs the show. He will be in the MVP race through the season because Milwaukee’s season depends on Antetokounmpo being on the court. If he were to go down for any reason, you could eliminate them from contention, especially being in the same conference as the defending champions.
These two teams are close in the Eastern Conference standings, with the Magic as the fourth seed and the Bucks as the sixth. Although some might believe a game in mid-January is insignificant, it could decide whether one of these teams gets a home-court advantage in the playoffs.

It’s been a little bit of a rough patch for the Knicks. Since their nine-game winning streak was snapped, they are only 2-5.
It’s getting to that point again where PG Jalen Brunson is trying to carry this team. He’s led the team in points and assists in three straight games — much of that has to do with having to play catch up.
This game might see an excellent performance from Brunson for a different reason. They’ll be playing the 76ers, who will be on the second leg of a back-to-back, which means they’ll likely be sitting several players.
Philadelphia has struggled against the point guard lately by allowing the fourth-most to point guards and 12th-most assists.
Nuggets C Nikola Jokic vs. Rockets: 50.5 Pts+Rebs+Asts — Less
We’ll take a look at another player projection for the Nuggets vs. Rockets. The success of Denver is carried on the shoulders of C Nikola Jokic. He looks to be the leading candidate to take home another MVP, thanks to being in the top three in points (31.2), rebounds (13.2), and assists (9.8).
His importance to the Nuggets is remarkable, and it shows in his league-leading +55 expected wins differential.
This matchup could be a tough spot, as they’ll be playing the second leg of a back-to-back, but it’s also a tough opponent. The Rockets are one of the top defenses in the league and are third in defensive efficiency.
In last night’s win against the Mavericks, Jokic picked up his usual triple-double, but he fell well short of his Pts+Reb+Ast projection and allowed Jamal Murry to go off for 45 points. It shows he doesn’t need to make a large impact on the stat sheet in order for the Nuggets to win.
Celtics G Jrue Holiday vs. Raptors: 18.5 Pts+Rebs+Asts — More
The Celtics are the defending champions, and although they are not on top of the current Eastern Conference standings, they are still the favorites to win it all. They are on a nice run, winning five of their last seven, and it’s impressive to see they only have one instance of losing back-to-back games.
One of the moves last season that took this roster to the next level was acquiring Jrue Holiday. He is one of those veterans who contributes in every facet, whether you need him to defend, score, or facilitate. He should do all that against the terrible Raptors, who are third-to-last in the East.
