Unrivaled Game Previews: Friday, January 31
In the first Both the Rose and the Phantom picked up their first win of the season last week over Mist BC. Phantom were missing Sabrina Ionescu, who was out in France for the NBA Paris games, but were still led by monster efforts by both Satou Sabally and Britney Griner, who both scored 29 points against the Mist.
For the Rose, Chelsea Gray put on a fourth-quarter masterclass scoring 9 of the 11 points needed in the untimed quarter for the win over Breanna Stewart’s team.
The league’s two best teams face off to close the slate, as the Laces BC take on the Lunar Owls at 8:30 p.m., and it should be an exciting one. The Laces picked up their most recent win without both Alyssa Thomas and Jackie Young. while the Lunar Owls are still business as usual running with their five-player rotation.
Phantom F Satou Sabally vs. Rose: 18.5 Points — More
Phantom F Satou Sabally went off for 48 total points last weekend, as Sabrina Ionescu was missing from the team. However, the Phantom should still enjoy seeing tons of scoring from Sabally this weekend. Sabally will match up with Angel Reese, and her versatile range of scoring should cause problems for the Rose forward.
Sabally will also get tons of mismatches on switches as well, potentially getting either Chelsea Gray or Kahleah Copper on to her. The Phantom forward can score in several ways and her being able to draw Reese outside the paint and potentially blow her off the dribble could prove fruitful in today’s matchup.
Rose G Chelsea Gray vs. Phantom: 14.5 Points — More
Chelsea Gray’s scoring output in Unrivaled has cooled off over the last couple of games, going less than this 12.5 points projection both times. An 8-of-27 shooting effort from the field did not help, but going up against one of the best defensive teams in the league last week in the Laces surely did not help either.
Gray gets matched up with Sabrina Ionescu today, and while the Phantom guard has improved on the defensive side of the ball, she still will be the weakest defender on the floor at most times. The 3x3 format means every little thing gets put under a microscope due to how much space there is on the floor. Look for Gray to be aggressive tonight after a dismal shooting effort last weekend.

Lunar Owls F Napheesa Collier vs. Laces: 24.5 Points — More
Last game saw Napheesa Collier fail to crack 20 points for the first time this whole Unrivaled season so look for a bounceback today. The Laces provide a tough defensive matchup on all fronts, but the Lunar Owls are getting the Laces without Alyssa Thomas.
Stefanie Dolson will be tasked with being the primary defender on Collier, and that will be a lot to ask for from the Laces’ only big on-the-floor. Dolson will struggle to move with Collier, and the Lunar Owls forward will be getting plenty of great looks both from the perimeter and the inside thanks to this matchup and switches as well.
There is also a chance Jackie Young gets ruled in for the Laces as well. If Young does start, there is a possibility that the Lunar Owls face one of the smallest lineups that has started in the league giving Collier an even better matchup.
Lunar Owls G Courtney Williams vs. Laces: 9.5 Points — More
With Collier getting the best matchup thanks to Thomas being out, it now leaves the Laces bench short-handed. Last time out without Thomas, bench guard Brittany Sykes scored 18 points for Rose BC. Lexie Hull also chipped in seven as well.
Jackie Young is questionable for this game so there is a chance she makes her debut. But if she does not, the Laces will be tasked with Kate Martin or newest roster signing Natisha Hiedeman to try and stop Williams. While Williams hasn’t hit this projection in the last two games, a stout defensive Laces team could mean more scoring will be coming off the bench for the number one team in the league.
