Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo 100.5 Rushing Yards — More
One benefit of this format for the college football playoffs is that it allows us to see someone walk into the spotlight and become a household name. This feels like an opportunity for Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo to increase his draft stock.
He finished sixth in rushing yards (1,568) and had a strong end to the season with back-to-back 170+ yards performances, including in the Big 12 Championship. Texas understands how tough it will be to defend him, and they are giving him the respect he deserves, with Texas defensive back Michael Taaffe saying, “He’s got the whole package.”
This is one of the best run defenses he will see so far, as Texas is 14th in PFF run defense grade (91.4), but with all due respect, Texas has not seen anyone as fierce as Skattebo. The most talented running backs the Longhorns have seen this year are Georgia RB Trevor Etienne (94 and 87 rush yards) and Florida RB Ja’Kobi Jackson (116 yards).
Skattebo is on a different level, and Texas will have issues keeping him less than this rushing yards number.
Arizona State QB Sam Leavitt 28.5 Pass Attempts — More
If Arizona State doesn’t want to meet the same fate as Clemson, they cannot solely let Skattebo control this game. Texas’ defense must also focus on Skattebo, or the Sun Devils could have trouble moving the ball.
The big reason why they’ve gotten this far is because of Skattebo, but they also trust Leavitt. He is efficient and accurate and doesn’t turn it over, and that’s why his 81.6 QBR is ninth in the country.
Texas was one of the top pass defenses in the country, as they only allowed 156.4 passing yards per game and only allowed a passing touchdown in four games. ASU will still try to establish the pass and have allowed over this number in back-to-back games.
Texas RB Quintrevion Wisner 88.5 Rushing Yards — Less
Texas RB Quintrevion Wisner emerged as the lead running back as the season progressed, and he’s been on a tear over the last few games by averaging 5.4 yards over his four and went for 110 yards in the first round against Clemson.
The question is, how healthy will he be for this game? He suffered a leg injury in the first half of the first round game and saw limited action afterward with just 14 carries, but they didn’t need to push him because they held a significant lead. RB Jaydon Blue took over and was excellent, with 146 on 10.4 yards per carry.
This will give Texas the confidence to make it a committee if Wisner isn’t 100%, but this also will be a tough matchup. Arizona State is 16th in rush EPA (-0.075), and they’ve allowed under 100 rushing yards in two of the last three games.
Texas WR Matthew Golden 52.5 Receiving Yards — More
The Longhorns have an outstanding collection of pass catchers, but Golden has been their most consistent this season. He leads the team in receiving yards (787) and yards per reception (16.1). This came after a slow start to the season, where it looked like Isaiah Bond would be the top receiver.
The key to Texas's ability to move the ball through the air is letting QB Quinn Ewers stay in the pocket. He’s not good at making throws on the run, which leads to turnovers.
Arizona State has been average in the pass rush, so the Longhorns' passing game could be productive with Golden leading the way. Golden has gone more than this number in three of his last four games, averaging 92.5 passing yards.
