Ohio State RB TreVeyon Henderson 52.5 Rush Yards — More
The key for Ohio State is to balance the run and the pass. RB TreVeyon Henderson had been the bell cow in Columbus for a couple of years, but he’s been in a shared backfield with transfer RB Quinshon Judkins this season. That has made him better, with a career-high 7 yards per carry. He’s been even better recently, with over 7.5 yards per carry in two of the last three games.
Oregon is solid against the run, ranking 49th in PFF run defense grade (83.4), but its problem when it played Ohio State in the first matchup was identifying the run plays. That pushed their linebackers back, allowing Henderson to be five yards up when he saw first contact. We’re going to see that again here, as this passing attack has only become more dangerous through the year.
Ohio State QB Will Howard 249.5 Passing Yards — More
That game was one where QB Will Howard had to show off his arm, as the Buckeyes trailed early, and he did with a season-high 326 yards. This is a very good Oregon secondary, but having potential NFL receivers like Jeremiah Smith and Emeka Egbuka makes Howard’s life easier.
Both teams know how explosive their offenses are, and with the game on neutral ground, this will turn into a shootout again. Howard will have multiple favorable matchups as long as the Buckeyes get the ground game going.
Oregon QB Dillion Gabriel 299.5 Pass Yards — More (Demon)
Ohio State allowed the fewest passing yards per game in college football this season (141.2), but that didn’t stop Gabriel from tossing for 341 yards — the second-highest against them was 201. That’s why you have to look beyond the stats. Oregon has faced some excellent defenses, but this is just a better offense.
They also have the balance of a solid run game with RB Jordan James, who ran for over 1,200 yards. This is another example of Gabriel having multiple options like Tez Johnson and Evan Stewart and should be able to have another great effort against a good defense in what profiles as a back-and-forth matchup.
Oregon WR Evan Stewart 19.5 Yards Longest Reception — More
That will be the toughest task for the Buckeyes: Can you contain Johnson and Stewart? You’re not going to hold down both, because it would be impossible to double-team both; we saw that when Stewart had 149 receiving yards and Johnson had 75 in the first game. It will be a pick-your-poison situation, but we could see like last time from the Ducks; they will have Stewart run the longer routes, and Johnson the shorter.
Those different looks will cause Ohio State to change personnel quite a bit, and both receivers will get favorable matchups. Four of Stewart’s seven catches in that last game were from ten yards out, and one was 20 with an extra 37 yards after the catch.
Gabriel will take that shot, and Stewart should come through with another explosive play.
