Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Netflix Hot Dog Eating Contest Picks

August 28, 2024

August 28, 2024

In this July 4, 2009 file photo, Joey Chestnut celebrates his victory in the Nathan's Famous July 4th Hot Dog Eating Contest, logging his third consecutive win over former champion Takeru Kobayashi. Just when you thought hot dog season was over, Netflix is firing up the grill. Not so arguably the two GOATs of food eating competitions, Joey Chestnut and Tareku Kobayashi will go head to head for the first time since 2009 to determine who the ultimate hot dog eater is.

On one hand, you have 16-time Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating champion Chestnut, currently the No. 1 competitive eater in the world. His opponent, six-time hot dog eating champion Kobayashi — considered the godfather of competitive eating — will look to settle the score, as before Chestnut's emergence in 2007, Kobayashi looked untouchable.

On PrizePicks, you can choose more or less on the number of hot dogs each of these eating legends will finish.

Chestnut vs Kobayashi on Netflix: Where, When, How to watch

Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef will start at 12 p.m. PT / 3 p.m. ET on Labor Day — Monday, Sept. 2. The bout will stream live exclusively on Netflix from the HyperX arena in Las Vegas.

You will need a subscription to Netflix to watch the glizzies get gobbled. The Netflix stream for Chestnut vs. Kobayashi will be a preamble for the much-anticipated Jake Paul vs Mike Tyson fight, now scheduled for November 15, 2024. Check out the trailer from Netflix below.

Will anyone else compete in Chestnut vs. Kobayashi?

While the main event of the evening is strictly mano a mano, the afternoon will have a few other eating stars. Matt Stonie will be there facing an opponent TBD. Stonie is the only man to beat Chestnut in the Nathan’s 4th of July event since his streak kicked off in 2007. Leah Shutkever, holder of 33 Guinness World Records for eating, will also be there on the undercard.

Netflix also announced that WWE legend Rey Mysterio will make an appearance. Rob Riggle and Nikki Garcia will host the stream, with Cari Champion and Chris Rose calling the matches.

Why now for Chestnut vs. Kobayashi?

When Joey Chestnut was barred from competing in Nathan’s Famous 4th of July competition this year due to his deal with Impossible, the competition lost so much of its spirit (and its reigning champion). Chestnut instead competed this July in a 4v1 event, and downed an ungodly 57 hot dogs in just five minutes

That number was just one dog away from this year's Nathan’s contest winning number of 58, but those competitors had 10 minutes.

Still, the world felt robbed of what is a 4th of July staple in many homes for the holiday. What better way to mend a broken heart than reignite a rivalry over a decade in the making with Chesnut and Kobayashi going head-to-head, dog-for-dog, one last time.

Why I’m Taking MORE in Chestnut vs. Kobayashi on PrizePicks

Chestnut Kobayashi Hot Dog Eating Content Projections on Netflix

Chesnut just squashed the washed allegations when he downed 57 hot dogs in five minutes. Now in a 10-minute affair, his projection is just eight more hot dogs. That’s disrespectful to the glizzy GOAT. If you think his pace will slow down that much after five minutes, remind yourself he destroyed 76 in a 10-minute outing in 2021.

After a long hiatus, Kobayashi looks to get back into form and I believe this revenge tour has motivated him to do just that against his long-time rival. In 10-minute contests, he smashed 63 dogs in 2007, 59 in 2008, and 69 in 2011. Known for his rigorous training and deeming what he does athletic over anything else, Kobayashi knows what this event means for his legacy.

Chestnut has been haunting his dreams for over a decade, and now it’s clear in Kobayashi's mind: “Retiring for me will only happen after I take him down one last time.” I see him getting through more than 51 with ease and shocking the world with how well he keeps pace with Chestnut throughout the contest.

You can take the more or less by going to the PrizePicks app. Just choose at least two projections from any sport — including NFL, college football, and lots more — and submit your lineup to win real cash.
