Five Players to Watch: 2024 NFL Preseason
The NFL Preseason gives us our first look at the rookies that are getting their first snaps in NFL jerseys. Here’s a few to keep an eye on through the preseason.
QB Jayden Daniels, Washington Commanders
No. 2 overall pick QB Jayden Daniels has received a constant flow of positive media attention out of Washington’s training camp. His teammates love him, he’s performing well, and he’s just an exciting player to watch.
Daniels’ is arguably more interesting to watch this preseason than Bears No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, as he’s still battling Marcus Mariota for the starting job. That said, Daniels seems to be solidifying himself as the QB1 thus far in camp, as he’s taking snaps with the starters.
For fantasy purposes, we’ll get a glimpse of how much of a dual-threat Daniels is in these few preseason games.
QB Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears
Williams will sit out the Hall of Fame Game, but all eyes will be on the first overall pick this preseason, alongside a plethora of weapons, including No. 9 overall pick WR Rome Odunze.
Coach Matt Eberflus has said he wants to see Williams get 45-55 reps this preseason, which is around the norm for a rookie QB of his caliber.
Williams, for good reason, is far and away the favorite to win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
QB Bo Nix, Denver Broncos
Oregon QB Bo Nix was the No. 12 overall pick in the draft, and he’s entrenched in a competition for the Broncos starting QB job versus Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham. Early indication is he won’t start the year as a starter, as he hasn’t had a stellar training camp.
That said, Nix may have an opportunity to prove himself in these few preseason games.
QB Michael Penix Jr., Atlanta Falcons
The Falcons shocked everyone when they took Penix with the No. 8 overall pick in the draft after signing QB Kirk Cousins to a franchise-level deal in the offseason. However, as a backup to Cousins, it’s possible we’ll get to see Penix really let it fly in his first NFL preseason.
Penix has been a highlight of Falcons training camp so far. If he continues to perform well and flash in the preseason — which wouldn’t be surprising — Falcons fans may continue to pound the Penix drum to start the season.
WR Malik Nabers, New York Giants
Nabers, the No. 12 overall pick in April, is guaranteed to be a huge part of this dilapidated Giants offense if he stays healthy this year. One team source has said he will hit 100 targets this year, especially getting him the ball in after-the-catch situations.
However, he has been taking planned limited reps in training camp — an odd approach to take with a rookie in his first camp. It’s likely we’ll get some glimpses of his 4.35 40-yard dash speed this preseason.
