NFL Training Camp News: Tuesday, August 13

Minnesota Vikings: QB J.J. McCarthy to undergo meniscus surgery

Vikings first-round QB J.J. McCarthy has a torn meniscus in his right knee and will miss an undetermined amount of time following surgery. According to Adam Schefter, the extent of the surgery will determine how long McCarthy will miss.

With a torn meniscus, McCarthy is at risk to miss the entire 2024 season, though it could also be 1-2 months.

Regardless, the Vikings and Justin Jefferson will start the season with Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback.

New York Giants: WR Malik Nabors “no doubt” to play in Week 1

Giants first-round WR Malik Nabers injured his ankle on Sunday, but doesn’t look to be in danger of missing any regular season time. Giants heawd coach Brian Daboll confirmed on Tuesday that it’s not a long-term concern.

He will likely miss the rest of the preseason, but Nabers said there’s no doubt he will play in Week 1.

Detroit Lions: RB Jahmyr Gibbs strains hamstring in practice

Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs strained his hamstring in Monday’s practice. It’s not a great sign for Gibbs, who just returned to training camp in late July after another soft tissue injury in OTAs in June.

There is currently no timeline on Gibbs’ return from the injury, or the severity of the injury.

NFL Training Camp News: Thursday, August 8

Tennessee Titans: Starters will play “a series or two” in Preseason Week 1

Titans HC Brian Callahan plans to play starters for a series or two in their NFL Preseason Week 1 game against the 49ers. All healthy starters will start the game. Injured starters and veterans under load management will be held out.

Chicago Bears: Starters will play in Preseason Week 1

Bears HC Matt Eberflus said starters will play in Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. That means No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams will get his first game action in a Bears jersey. The Bills plan to play their starters for the first quarter, while Bears starters will play for an unknown number of snaps.

New York Jets: Mike Williams: “We’ll see” about playing in Week 1

Jets new WR Mike Williams has been recovering from a torn ACL from last season. Williams was activated from the physically unable to perform list this week, and has started to participate in training camp.

However, Williams is noncommittal on his status for Week 1, telling reporters “we’ll have to see” if he plays in the season opener on Monday Night Football.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Bucs starters to sit Week 1, Kyle Trask to start at QB

The Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles announced the team will sit most of their starters for the preseason opener. “You may see two or three of them in there for a series or two, but most of them won’t play,” Bowles said.

That means QB Kyle Trask will start at quarterback in place of Baker Mayfield, likely playing half of the game. John Wolford will handle the rest of the snaps.

NFL Training Camp News: Wednesday, August 7

Atlanta Falcons: Slot WR Rondale Moore carted off

Falcons WR Rondale Moore was carted off the practice field with an inflatable cast on his right leg at training camp practice on Wednesday. He is being rushed to a medical facility, so the injury does seem to be serious.

Moore had been competing with Ray-Ray McCloud for the starting slot role, but has mostly been playing with the second team in camp. Moore is on the fifth and final year of his rookie contract.

Indianapolis Colts: WR Josh Downs injured ankle during practice

Colts WR Josh Downs injured his ankle after being tackled at training camp practice. Downs did not put weight on his lower leg when he left the field. The team is currently unsure how serious the injury is.

It’s a brutal blow for Downs, who had 771 yards in his rookie year and was locked into the WR2 role for the Colts, who get their franchise QB back this season. With the season a month away, it seems likely that Downs will miss some regular season time. If so, look for second-round rookie Adonai Mitchell (who is starting at the X) and Alec Pierce — who previously played in the slot —  to soak up his targets.

Update: Downs has been diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. Typical time frame is 4-6 weeks for this kind of injury. He may miss the first 1-2 weeks of the regular season.

Pittsburgh Steelers: QB Justin Fields will start Preseason Week 1, competing for starting job

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin announced that Justin Field will get the start in preseason Week 1. Russell Wilson will sit out the game with the calf injury that has kept him out of camp.

Tomlin also told reporters that Fields is “very much” competing for the starting job with Wilson, who has opened up the opportunity for Fields by missing camp. From all indications, Fields has the inside track on the starting job for Week 1. It’s unlikely we see Fields for more than a few possessions in the Steelers preseason opener.

Las Vegas Raiders: No QB decision, both will play a quarter in Preseason Week 1

Raiders coach Antonio Pierce told ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez that both Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew will play a quarter in the team’s preseason opener. Pierce plans to rotate the starting QBs between preseason Week 1 and 2. It sounds like these reps will be crucial in deciding which QB starts at the regular season starter.

Los Angeles Rams: WR Puka Nacua (knee) “no threat” to miss Week 1

Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters that Puka Nacua’s injury is nothing serious or structural, and he will be ready to play Week 1 vs Detroit.

“He’ll be in good shape,” McVay said about Nacua’s status for Week 1.

Cincinnati Bengals: QB Joe Burrow will play in Preseason Week 1

Bengals QB Joe Burrow, who missed the second half of 2023 with a wrist injury, will play in the preseason. Burrow has rarely played in preseason previously, but he will get the extra reps leading up to the regular season.

It’s unlikely we’ll see Burrow play more than two series in any preseason game, but it’s still a great indication of his health heading into the regular season.

New York Giants: WR Malik Nabers a starter on first depth chart

As expected, first-round WR Malik Nabers is listed as a starter in the Giants first depth chart of the season. Nabers has been a darling of Giants training camp, drawing rave reviews across the board.

He is expected to lead a WR corps that includes Jalin Hyatt, Darius Slayton, and WanDale Robinson.

NFL Training Camp: Tuesday, August 6

San Francisco 49ers: RB Christian McCaffrey strained calf, out for preseason

The consensus No. 1 overall pick in fantasy football drafts is dealing with an injury. 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey strained his calf at training camp and will be sidelined for the entire preseason. He is expected to be available for the 49ers season opener against the Jets on September 9.

McCaffrey is coming off a career year in 2023; he was a huge component of the 49ers’ becoming the best team in the NFC. McCaffrey’s direct backup is Elijah Mitchell. McCaffrey has seven different season-long projections on PrizePicks — see them below.

Christian McCaffrey fantasy football projections 2024

Washington Commanders: QB Jayden Daniels listed as starting QB

Blessed day. The Commanders have named No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels as their starting QB on their first depth chart of the season. The Commanders head coach Dan Quinn also dropped a glowing review about Daniels at training camp:

From a fantasy perspective, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Daniels have a better season than No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, who is far more of a pocket passer than Daniels. Meanwhile, Daniels has been leaning into his athleticism in training camp, and won’t hesitate to run the ball.

Denver Broncos: QB Jarrett Stidham listed as starting QB

The Broncos first unofficial depth chart of training camp is set: QB1 Jarrett Stidham, QB2 Zach Wilson, QB3 first-round QB Bo Nix. Stidham is the incumbent starter, and has done enough to retain the position.

However, we can expect to see Wilson, and especially Nix, be given the opportunity through preseason — and into the regular season — to win the starting job.

San Francisco 49ers: WR Brandon Aiyuk can negotiate with other teams

It seems that contract negotiations between the 49ers and WR1 Brandon Aiyuk are not going as planned. The 49ers are not willing to listen to trade offers for Aiyuk, and have given teams permission to negotiate a new contract with him.

Since this news broke, the Patriots, Browns, and Steelers have been in contact with the 49ers about a potential trade. The Patriots appear as the current front-runners, as they have been interested in Aiyuk for months.

Currently, Aiyuk is set to play this season on the fifth-year option on his rookie contract worth $14.1 million.

Carolina Panthers: QB Bryce Young won’t play in Preseason Week 1

Panthers QB Bryce Young will sit out the first game of the preseason. It’s not especially important news, as the Panthers are just protecting the former No. 1 overall pick.

However, it will be relevant for NFL preseason DFS, as QB Andy Dalton is already out. That leaves two quarterbacks on the roster: Jack Plummer and Jake Luton. They should each split time in Thursday’s preseason opener.

Cleveland Browns: QB Deshaun Watson to sit out Preseason Week 1

Browns QB Deshaun Watson won’t play in the Browns preseason opener on Sunday, according to coach Kevin Stefanski. The Browns will likely be cautious with their starting QB coming off season-ending shoulder surgery in 2023.

That leaves Jameis Winston, Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Tyler Huntley to play in Preseason Week 1 — we should expect to see Thompson-Robinson and Huntley the most.

NFL Training Camp News: Monday, August 5

Atlanta Falcons: WR Ray-Ray McCloud wins starting slot WR job

The Falcons brought in WR Ray-Ray McCloud and WR Rondale Moore in the offseason, and the two have battled for the slot role in camp. However, it was clear early on that McCloud had the inside track on the starting role.

McCloud is expected to be the starting slot receiver come September, per the Athletic, as Moore continues to work with the second-team offense.

Carolina Panthers: First-round WR Xavier Legette (foot) considered day-to-day

Panthers received good news about their first-round WR Xavier Legette on Monday. Legette is considered day-to-day with a foot injury, after an MRI revealed no fractures in his food.

No. 32 overall pick Legette likely won’t play in the preseason out of caution — certainly not in Preseason Week 1 — but he should be ready to go for the regular season.

Los Angeles Rams: WR Puka Nacua “week to week” with knee injury

Adam Schefter reported that Rams WR Puka Nacua is “week to week” with a knee injury, but the injury is not considered serious. Nacua left practice on Sunday.

It’s likely that Nacua will be ready for Week 1 against the Lions. However, if he was to miss any time, Cooper Kupp and Demarcus Robinson would be in for more targets to start the year.

Philadelphia Eagles: WR Devonta Smith unrecoverable in training camp

Eagles WR AJ Brown said to reporters “nobody has been able to cover [WR DeVonta Smith]” in training camp. Smith has got rave reviews from coaches and reporters all camp — it looks like the Eagles may have the most dangerous 1-2 WR duo in the NFL.

Smith is projected for over 1,000 receiving yards for the 2024 season on PrizePicks. See his full projections below.

New York Jets: WR Allen Lazard starting at WR

WR Allen Lazard had a miserable season in 2023, but he will get another opportunity with his long-time quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2024. Lazard was listed as a starting WR opposite Garrett Wilson in the team’s official depth chart.

Xavier Gipson also won the team’s starting slot role, as well as the kickoff and punt returner role. It’s likely that Lazard will be relegated to the bench once WR Mike Williams returns from his ACL injury.

Kansas City Chiefs: K Harrison Butker signs 4-year, $25.6M extension

The Chiefs have their kicker locked down until 2028. Kicker Harrison Butker became the NFL’s highest paid kicker on Tuesday, as he agreed to a 4-year, $25.6 million extension with $17.75 million guaranteed.

Butker was fantastic last season, as he was perfect in the Chiefs postseason Super Bowl run, and 33-of-35 on field goals in the regular season.

Seattle Seahawks: QB Geno Smith already back at practice

QB Geno Smith missed some practice time last week and received scans on his knee and hip. However, he’s already back in practice. It seems he’s good to go.

NFL Training Camp News: Friday, August 2

Seattle Seahawks: Schefter: QB Geno Smith "shouldn't miss any time" with knee/hip injury

Seahawks QB Geno Smith underwent imagine on his knee and hip after missing training camp practice this week. While he is expected to practice this week, he isn't expected to miss any game time, according to Adam Schefter.

The 33-year-old quarterback may take it easy in the preseason, but should be ready for the regular season. His season-long projection on PrizePicks is 3,449.5 yards and 21.5 touchdowns. He’s reached the yardage mark in each of the last two seasons, but only threw 20 touchdowns in 2024.

Seahawks QB Geno Smith fantasy football projections 2024 prizepicks

Detroit Lions: Lions OC praises WR Jameson Williams

WR Jameson Williams looks poised for a breakout season in 2024. After missing his rookie year, then missing almost half of 2023 due to suspension, he's received nothing but positive reviews in training camp — most recently from offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

"We started feeling it towards the end of last year and he's taken that to another level in the springtime and so far here in training camp," Johnson said. "He prides himself on bringing some juice to the offense and we certainly feel it out there ... I haven't seen anything that he can't do."

New Orleans Saints: WR Rashid Shaheed "primed for a big year"

Saints WR Rashid Shaheed burst onto the scene last year with 719 yards and five touchdowns when the Saints needed him to step up due to injuries across their WR corps. Now, he's impressing in camp. Here's what Audacy.com reported on Shaheed's impressive camp:

"Rashid Shaheed has been so consistent and effective that we're going to stop talking about him. I'm fairly certain he's won every 1-on-1 rep he's taken in camp, and won them fairly easily. At one point today I heard WRs coach Keith Williams instructing him not to take any more reps. It wasn't a punishment. It was a statement. He showed everything he needed to show. I think he's primed for a big year."

QB Derek Carr looks to have a solid 1-2 punch with Chris Olave and Shaheed.

NFL Training Camp News: Thursday, August 1

Tennessee Titans: WR DeAndre Hopkins out 4-6 weeks with knee strain

Titans WR DeAndre Hopkins will miss 4-6 weeks with a knee strain, according to Paul Kuharsky. Based on the injury timeline, at best, Hopkins will return for the regular season, which starts on June 8; at worst, he could miss three regular season games.

It’s a brutal blow for a team that is relying on a big second season from QB Will Levis. If Hopkins misses any time, it should be a boost to Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd’s production — both players joined the Titans in the offseason.

With the injury, it’s worth noting that Hopkins is entering his age 32 season.

Los Angeles Charges: QB Justin Herbert week-to-week with a foot injury

The Los Angeles Chargers announced that QB Justin Herbert is week-to-week with a plantar fascia (foot) injury. Herbert is expected to join the team for the regular season when it starts Sept. 8 versus the Raiders.

Herbert will wear a boot for two weeks and gradually return. Easton Stick and Max Duggan are next in line on the Chargers depth chart if Herbert was to miss any time.

Green Bay Packers: RB Josh Jacobs misses practice with groin injury

Packers RB Josh Jacobs did not participate in the team drills during training camp on Thursday due to a minor groin injury. Jacobs said he would have played in a game and it's just a "tweak", according to Kyle Malzhan.

Jacobs signed a four-year, $48 million contract in the offseason, and is expected to be a key cog of the Packers offense. However, although minor, this is is his soft-tissue injury this offseason. Jacobs is only 26 years old, a prime year for running backs, but he is entering his sixth NFL season, where injuries are naturally a concern.

Jacobs is still expected to be one of the top running backs for fantasy football in the league this year, playing on the best offense he’s been a part of.

NFL Training Camp News: Wednesday, July 31

Buffalo Bills: Khalil Shakir the "steady force" in camp

Bills moved on from both Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis in the offseason, opening up nearly 2,000 yards in receiving production that needs to be replaced this year. Enter Khalil Shakir, the third-year receiver who had 611 yards and two touchdowns in 2024. This year, he'll be an every-down starting WR for the Bills, alongside second-round pick Keon Coleman.

According to The Athletic, Shakir has shown that he's a "trusted asset" for QB Josh Allen during training camp. That's good news for Shakir, who has made a ton of big plays in training camp.

Shakir's 2024 season projections are live on PrizePicks. See Shakir's projections below.

Bills WR Khalil Shakir 2024 fantasy football projections on PrizePicks

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Rookie WR Jalen McMillan a "stud" in camp

In an interview with NFL Network, Bucs QB Baker Mayfield said third-round WR Jalen McMillan is "back to true form" after missing much fo 2023 with a knee injury, and he's been a "stud" in camp. Mayfield said McMillan has been performing like a veteran in camp, and seems to have chemistry with Mayfield.

Head coach Todd Bowles said on Wednesday that McMillan has "made every play since day one. ... I like where he's at."

McMillan was the third WR drafted out of Washington in the NFL Draft. Coming into the 2023 season, McMillan was the top receiver on Washington's depth chart, alongside Rome Odunze — the Bears' first-round pick. He looks to have the inside track on the WR3 role for the Bucs.

New England Patriots: Rookie WR Ja'Lynn Polk a "regular" in Patriots offense

Speaking of former Washington Huskies receivers, Ja'Lynn Polk is regularly playing with the starters in Patriots training camp and has "popped more" than recent Patriots rookie WRs.

The second-round pick is getting involved mostly through quick outs and short receptions in camp. The Patriots team website called Polk "a Jakobi Meyers clone" in the way he's being used in the offense.

While Polk has been used downfield, it looks like the Patriots want to see Polk's explosiveness after the catch.

Kansas City Chiefs: WR Kadarius Toney injures leg at camp

WR Kadarius Toney injured his right leg at Wednesday's training camp practice. After time in the injury tent, he was eventually taken to team facilities in a cart. Toney has been mixing in at RB during training camp, and looks poised for a utility role for the Chiefs if healthy.

However, Toney has had trouble staying healthy during his NFL career — this is just the latest in a string of bad luck. It's unknown how serious the injury is.

Los Angeles Chargers: Gus Edwards, JK Dobbins splitting first-team reps

RB Gus Edwards recently returned to training camp after recovering from offseason surgery. In his first practice back, Edwards split first-team reps 50-50 with JK Dobbins in 11 on 11. While Dobbins has been expected to lead this backfield, it looks likely to be a shared backfield as of now, if training camp is any indication.

All the other backs — including rookie Kimani Vidal — worked exclusively with the second team.

Los Angeles Rams: WR Cooper Kupp in "the best shape he's been in in years"

Rams WR Cooper Kupp struggled with injuries all of 2023. But according to Peter Schrager, he's left the injury behind him in 2024.

"Cooper Kupp, coming off a little bit of an injury. Wasn’t himself last year maybe, looks amazing," Schrager said. "He is in the best shape he’s been in in years."

Schrager was also impressed by Puka Nacua, who had an "incredible" practice. Kupp's season-long projections are live on the NFLSZN board on PrizePicks.

Rams WR Cooper Kupp 2024 fantasy football projections PrizePicks

Pittsburgh Steelers: George Pickens, Van Jefferson starting in two-WR sets

With Diontae Johnson out of Pittsburgh, the Steelers are looking for their new WR2 for Russell Wilson. It looks like Van Jefferson is their guy for now, especially with rookie WR Roman Wilson now week-to-week with an ankle injury.

Jefferson has played four season in the NFL, with his best season being a 50-catch, 802-yard, six-touchdown campaign in 2021. He had just 20 catches and no touchdowns last season with the Rams and Falcons.

NFL Training Camp News: Tuesday, July 30

New York Jets: QB Aaron Rodgers unlikely to play in preseason

Those looking forward to seeing Jets QB Aaron Rodgers back on the field after his torn Achilles will likely have to wait until the Week 1 matchup against the 49ers on Monday Might Football.

Jets coach Robert Saleh said Rodgers definitely won't play in the team's first two preseason games, with the door open for the third game against the New York Giants on August 24. Saleh's "instinct" is telling him to keep Rodgers sidelined through preseason.

It makes sense for the Jets to protect their 40-year-old franchise quarterback coming back from a major surgery. However, many reports have already indicated Rodgers' frustrations with the Jets offense through training camp.

Dallas Cowboys: Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb negotiations "very cordial and upbeat"

In a radio spot on Tuesday, Cowboys EVP Stephen Jones said that he feels optimistic that the Cowboys will get new deals done with QB Dak Prescott and WR CeeDee Lamb.

Negotiations with Prescott could have become more difficult after Tua Tagovailoa and Jordan Love each signed deals worth an average $50 million per year. According to Jones, the ball is in Prescott's court. See the full quote below.

Chicago Bears: WR DJ Moore 4-year, $110 million contract extension

Bears WR DJ Moore signed a four-year, $110 million contract extension, with $82.6 million guaranteed, according to Adam Schefter. Moore had two years left on his deal, but was given the largest deal in franchise history that makes him a Bear until 2029.

The Bears locked down Moore after his first season in Chicago, where he ripped 96 receptions for 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns. The Bears have an incredible receiving corps with Moore; maybe even the best in the NFL, depending on how rookie WR Rome Odunze develops.

Las Vegas Raiders: Aiden O'Connell "a little better" than Gardner Minshew in camp

The Raiders QB is one of the only unknown starting QBs in the league. So far, there hasn't been a ton of clarity, as both incumbent starter Aiden O'Connell and Gardner Minshew have traded reps in training camp.

On Tuesday, O'Connell took all of the first-team reps and was "a little better" than Gardner Minshew's performance on Monday.

Detroit Lions: WR Jameson Williams — "I just feel different."

After missing his rookie season with an ACL injury, and almost half of 2023 due to a gambling suspension, WR Jameson Williams will finally get a shot at a full NFL season in his third season. He seems to be taking advantage of the opportunity.

"I feel a lot different from the last two years." Williams said to The Detroit News. "In the offseason, OTAs, I came back on a mission. My mission was just to be the best player I can be, get back to where I was before I was injured, and that was just my goal."

He spent time in Los Angeles with QB Jared Goff in the offseason, and reports from camp on Williams have been glowing thus far. Dude seems locked in and could be dangerous alongside Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Dallas Cowboys: Royce Freeman could be Cowboys RB2

The Cowboys have big shoes to fill at RB with the departure of Tony Pollard. One piece of that is Royce Freeman, who will compete with Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott for snaps.

On Thursday, Cowboys Vice President Stephen Jones said that Freeman has "really impressed," and "He'll be a good addition and great complement to (Elliott)." It's worth noting that Elliott is 29-years-old, while Freeman is 28-years-old — both considered past RB prime age. Full comment below.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Rookie WR Roman Wilson carted off from practice

Steelers rookie WR Roman Wilson was carted off the practice field today after injuring what appeared to be his foot or ankle, according to reporters. The injury came on a jet sweep on the first day with pads on. Head coach Mike Tomlin did not give clarity on how much time Wilson could miss.

Wilson, the third-round pick from Michigan, has taken snaps with the first-team and was in competition for the No. 2 receiver role left vacant by Diontae Johnson. Van Jefferson likely has the inside track on that role if Wilson misses any significant time.

Carolina Panthers: RB Rashaad Penny retires

Rashaad Penny is retiring from the NFL after six seasons, as the team placed him on the reserve/retired list during training camp on Tuesday.

Last week, Penny said he's "one of the best RBs in the league when he's healthy. This week, he's hanging it up.

Penny played five seasons for the Seattle Seahawks, before playing three games with the Philadelphia Eagles last year. He totaled 1,951 yards and 13 touchdowns in his career.

Atlanta Falcons: Rondale Moore "heating up" in camp

The Falcons made two acquisitions in the offseason to shore up their receiving corps for new QB Kirk Cousins, signing slot receiver Rondale Moore and Darnell Mooney. With Mooney starting opposite Drake London, early reports in camp have Ray-Ray McCloud playing all of the starting slot snaps in 11-on-11.

Today, head coach Raheem Morris said Moore is starting to "heat up" in camp, implying the battle for slot receiver is still on. So far, Moore has played mostly with the second team in camp, but he may be getting his chance with starters.

Jacksonville Jaguars: Going with rookie Cam Little at Kicker

The Jaguars released kicker Riley Patterson on Monday night, leaving sixth-round rookie Cam Little as the only kicker on the roster. Little is now likely to be the Week 1 starter.

Patterson went 16-of-18 on field goals last season, and also played in Jacksonville in 2022. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him get some looks on the open market.

NFL Training Camp News: Monday, July 29

San Francisco 49ers: First-round WR Ricky Pearsall practicing

49ers WR Ricky Pearsall was activated from the non-football injury list and practiced on the first day of pads at 49ers training camp today. WR Brandon Aiyuk is still in the midst of contract negotiations, so Pearsall's addition to the team was much needed.

Pearsall was the No. 31 overall pick in the NFL Draft and is expected to compete with Jauan Jennings for the 49ers WR3 role, assuming Aiyuk signs a new contract before the season.

Indianapolis Colts: DE Samson Ebukam tore Achilles, will miss season

Colts DE Samson Ebukam won't be playing in the 2024 season after tearing his Achilles at Sunday's practice.

Ebukam is coming off a career year where he ad 57 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles. It's a brutal loss for the Colts, and devastating news for the six-year veteran. The Colts did draft DE Laiatu Latu in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, who should help replace Ebukam.

Philadelphia Eagles: Will use RB Will Shipley as pass-catching RB

Eagles fourth-round pick Will Shipley has been used as a pass-catching RB during training camp, even running routes out of the slot with the first-team, according to PHLY. Shipley had 69 catches in addition to his over 2,000 rushing yards over the last two seasons at Clemson.

How the Eagles are using Shipley is not surprising, considering Saquon Barkley's age and emphasis on keeping his legs fresh. Of course, Kenneth Gainwell will continue to mix in the backfield as well.

Pittsburgh Steelers: TE Pat Freiermuth is "clear No.2 receiver"

The Steelers let WR Diontae Johnson walk to the Carolina Panthers in 2024, replacing him at WR2 with Van Jefferson and Quez Watkins in the offseason. But TE Pat Freiermuth has benefitted the most so far in camp from Johnson's departure, becoming the clear No. 2 target option for the first-team offense.

Freiermuth had a career-low 302 yards and two touchdowns in 2023 across 12 games. In 2023, QB Russell Wilson ranked 47th among qualifying quarterbacks in percentage of passes thrown to tight ends — so it's hard to expect a lot from Freiermuth.

New York Giants: WR Malik Nabers compared to WR Odell Beckham Jr.

Giants writer Art Stapleton said rookie WR Malik Nabers haz the special qualities that the team has not had since WR Odell Beckham Jr. Even then, Stapleton said that Nabers is better "at the top of his routes" than Beckham was as a rookie.

Nabers has made some great plays thus far in camp and is working with the first-team.

NFL Training Camp News: Friday, July 26

Green Bay Packers: Jordan Love signs 4-year, $220M contract extension

Jordan Love signed a 4-year, $220 million contract extension, which makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history — tied with Trevor Lawrence. It also includes a $75 million signing bonus.

Love will now return to join the team in training camp. Love was second in passing touchdowns last season, and led the Packers to the NFC Divisional Round last year.

Miami Dolphins: Tua Tagovailoa practices, signs $212M contract extension

Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa is in the midst of a hold-in as he seeks a contract extension from the Dolphins. After a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and sitting out 11-on-11 drills on Thursday, Tagovailoa got in a full practice on Friday.

The Dolphins have maintained that they want to pay Tagovailoa before the season starts. A full practice is a good sign for the negotiations as the season closes in.

UPDATE: Tua Tagovailoa signed a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension with reportedly $167 million guaranteed. It's the highest paying four-year contract in NFL history, and the largest contract in Miami Dolphins history. It makes Tagovailoa the third highest-paid quarterback in the NFL behind only Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow.

New York Jets: Breece Hall - “I’m rushing for 1,000 yards.”

RB Breece Hall fell six yards short of the 1,000 rushing yard mark in his 2023 sophomore season. This year, Hall says he’s hitting that mark.

“I’m going to, for sure, have 1,000 yards this year.” Hall said on Thursday. “I’m not really worried about it … I’m one of the best running backs in the league.”

Hall’s season-long projection on PrizePicks is 1,025.5 rushing yards for the 2024 season.

Source: New York Post

Detroit Lions: K Michael Badgley out for the season

Kicker Michael Badgley injured his hamstring in Thursday’s practice and will miss the entire 2024 season. ESPN reported that Badgley tore his hamstring.

Badgley has been in the NFL since 2018. In 16 games with the Lions between 2022 and 2023, he’s gone 24-for-28 on field goals.

The Lions have Jake Bates on the roster as the only other kicker and plan to work out more kickers to compete for the starting job.

Cleveland Browns: QB Deshaun Watson throwing in 11-on-11

Cleveland Browns: Nick Chubb sprinting, doing agility drills

Browns RB Nick Chubb was seen at practice doing agility drills, cutting through cones, and running full speed sprints on a separate practice field on Friday. Chubb is recovering from a serious knee injury he suffered in Week 2 last season.

Chubb was placed on the PUP list to start camp. If he remains on the PUP, he will miss at least four weeks to start the year. Jerome Ford is currently taking the first-team reps at running back,

Kansas City Chiefs: Kadarius Toney playing with starters

WR Kadarius Toney has been getting reps with the first-team in Chiefs training camp. Toney has continued to take snaps out of the backfield in camp, but he’s also playing as a starting WR.

Toney is a difficult player to project for fantasy football, as he’s used as a utility player by the Chiefs and has struggled to stay healthy — although he did play a career-high 13 games last season. Toney is competing with Marquise Brown, Rashee Rice, and rookie Xavier Worthy for snaps.

Brown is the only Chiefs WR on the PrizePicks NFL season-long board. See Brown’s projections below.

Indianapolis Colts: Run AR, Run

Head coach Shane Steichen responded to questions about QB Anthony Richardson’s usage in the run game on Thursday following last year's season-ending shoulder injury. To keep it simple: He’s gonna continue to be a big part of the Colts run game plans.

“It’s just like ‘hey, are you gonna limit the run game?’ And I kind of think, like, ‘shoot, are you gonna limit Steph Curry from shooting three-pointers? That’s one of Anthony’s strengths. We’re not gonna get away from that. That’s what he does well,” Steichen said.

Richardson ran with the same narrative in his media session, telling reporters: "My legs have always been one of my superpowers. Trying to take that away from me, I I don’t think that’s a good thing for this offense. It’s just more so me playing a little bit smarter, and learning how to take care of myself and my teammates."

Richardson rushed for 136 yards and four touchdowns in three and a half games last year. Expect Richardson to put up more big numbers in the rushing game in his sophomore season.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Russell Wilson banged up

QB Russell Wilson is being called day-to-day with a calf injury. He woke up with the injury (how does that even happen?) and has been sitting out of training camp practices.

Justin Fields has stepped into the QB1 spot in practice in his place, resulting in a ton of buzz about his performance on Twitter.

However, The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly — who has covered the Steelers for years — said his performance has been inconsistent thus far in camp.

Atlanta Falcons: Kirk Cousins preseason status

QB Kirk Cousins is fully cleared to participate in training camp after tearing his Achilles nine months ago. There’s still no decision on whether Cousins will get live snaps in preseason games, though Cousins said today the coaching staff is planning to hold him out. He will continue to be somewhat limited in practice until he gets up to speed.

Cleveland Browns: HC Stefanski to call plays

Head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed that he will retain play-calling duties in 2024. The Browns were one of the fastest-moving offenses in 2023, leading the league in plays per game by a wide margin at 69.8 — Dallas was next at 67.3. Stefanski has called plays for the Browns since he was hired in 2020

Los Angeles Chargers: Starting WRs coming into focus

On the second day of training camp in the two-minute drill, the Chargers ran three wide receiver sets with second-round pick Ladd McConkey, Josh Palmer, and D.J. Chark. Notably missing from the core three is last year's first-round pick Quentin Johnston, who had a disappointing rookie season to put it lightly.

Johnston has got some attention for his strong start in camp — mostly with the second team, but it looks like he's still on the outside looking in when the Chargers are in move-the-ball situations. For QB Justin Herbert, it's not looking promising with this WR corps.

Las Vegas Raiders: QB1 decision not made yet

Head coach Antonio Pierce said he will make a QB1 decision between Aidan O’Connell and Gardner Minshew “when it’s right.” He said: “No need to rush it, I mean, but when it’s clear and it’s evident, then we need to make that decision and move forward. … It’ll take its course while we’re [at training camp].” Currently, O’Connell is expected to have the inside track as the incumbent starter.

Denver Broncos: RB Javonte Williams slimmed down

Javonte Williams has lost 11 pounds ahead of his third year following a year of bulking up in 2023. He’ll play much closer to the size he played during his breakout rookie year before his knee injury. “I thought he looked sharp today. He looked much different,” head coach Sean Payton said, via the Associated Press.
