In the first matchup, we predicted this game would be physical; we got that and more. They immediately showed that they didn’t like each other; the moment the puck dropped, so did the gloves, and we had three fights in the first nine seconds.

It remained physical for the entire game, as we saw 64 hits. The USA had the advantage there (34-29), and more importantly, the goal advantage with a 3-1 win. 

The low-scoring game does not reflect the forward talent, because each of these teams has some of the best in the NHL. Each team will have at least one Hart Trophy: Auston Matthews for the USA and Nathan MacKinnon, Sidney Crosby, and Connor McDavid for Canada. The Canadians also have three Conn Smythe winners (Connor McDavid, Cale Makar, and Sidney Crosby). Each team has star power on offense that could highly impact the outcome of this game.

One of the aspects that made this game low-scoring the first time was that each team’s blue line played very well. There were 36 blocked shots, and each team aggressively disrupted their opponent’s puck movement in the neutral zone and outside of the circles. 

The biggest question for Canada is goaltending. Jordan Binnington will be in the net, but he’s been inconsistent in the 4 Nations Face-Off, allowing eight goals and a .891 save percentage in three games. The USA has the opposite problem, with reigning Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck allowing just two goals and a .957 save percentage in two games.

That last game between Canada vs. USA was close for the entire 60 minutes until USA sealed it with an empty net goal, and we should expect the same in the finals.
