Starting Pitchers Sleepers for 2025 Fantasy Baseball
Spencer Schwellenbach, Atlanta Braves – SP35
Spencer Schwellenbach comes with plenty of pedigree after being selected in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft. He reached Double-A last season, then jumped straight to the majors.
He certainly looked like he belonged, sporting a 3.35 ERA that was supported by a 3.29 FIP across 21 starts. He had a 25.4% strikeout rate and generated a 1.04 WHIP. With a rotation spot in hand this season, he could provide significant value later in drafts, as he looks to have a mid-rotation spot locked down.
Clarke Schmidt, New York Yankees – SP54
After posting a 4.64 ERA and a 4.42 FIP in 2023, Schmidt recorded a 2.85 ERA and a 3.58 FIP over 16 starts last year. He made two significant improvements that resulted in his better production. After allowing 1.4 HR/9 in 2023, he allowed 0.8 HR/9 last year. He also increased his strikeout rate from 21.5% in 2023 to 26.3% in 2024.
Schmidt is locked into the Yankees starting rotation with Luis Gil (lat) likely out multiple months, so don’t forget about him late in drafts.
Bowden Francis, Toronto Blue Jays – SP57
Francis dominated down the stretch last season, recording a 1.33 ERA and a 0.50 WHIP over his last eight starts. He logged at least seven innings in five of those outings and compiled 49 strikeouts over 54 innings. One of his best pitches last season was his split finger, which held opponents to a .169 batting average and a .169 slugging percentage against.
The Blue Jays have some starting pitching depth, but his strong performance to close out 2024 has likely landed Francis with a spot in their rotation.
