Super Bowl Matchups: Quarterbacks
Below, we’ll highlight two Super Bowl matchups for the quarterbacks on each team — Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts.
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts vs. Chiefs
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts appears to have a relatively favorable matchup in the Super Bowl against a Chiefs defense that ranks 18th in passing yards allowed to quarterbacks (234.3 yards per game) and 28th in rushing yards allowed to QBs (27.1 yards per game). Given Hurts’ dual-threat ability, on the ground and through the air, these statistics suggest he could find opportunities to excel.
The last time he faced the Chiefs — in the 2023 season — he made significant plays despite limited passing yards. He ran for two touchdowns in that matchups — a 21-17 win. He leaned heavily on WR DeVonta Smith, who had 99 of the team’s 150 receiving yards.
Super Bowl Matchup Rating: Green
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes vs. Eagles
Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is in pursuit of a historic three-peat but faces a much tougher challenge in this matchup. The Eagles’ secondary is third in the NFL, permitting just 184.90 passing yards per game in the regular season, and top 10 in fewest completions allowed (20 per contest).
Mahomes’ last two meetings with Philadelphia in 2023 resulted in passing totals of only 182 and 177 yards — well below his 251-yard projection on PrizePicks. Moreover, in his last five playoff games, he has averaged 232 passing yards, falling 28 yards short of that projection and more than 50 yards yards above the Eagles’ defensive average.

Super Bowl Matchups: Running Backs
Below, we’ll highlight two Super Bowl matchups for running backs on each team.
Eagles RB Saquon Barkley vs. Chiefs
Eagles RB Saquon Barkley is enjoying a top-three RB campaign — if not the best — among NFL running backs, averaging an impressive 130 rushing yards per game. Over his last five contests (including three playoff appearances), he has pushed that average to 152.
However, the Chiefs’ run defense ranks first in the NFL in rushing yards allowed to running backs (56 per game) and top five in limiting attempts (17 per contest). Recent evidence, though, suggests a possible downturn for Kansas City, as James Cook and Najee Harris each surpassed their rushing projections in recent outings, indicating that Barkley could still have success on the ground.
Super Bowl Matchup Rating: Green
Chiefs RB Samaje Perine vs. Eagles
The Eagles own one of the best pass defenses in the NFL, limiting wide receivers to a league-low 123 yards per game and tight ends to 42 yards per game (7th). However, running backs fare somewhat better, averaging 34 receiving yards per contest (20th in the NFL). This opens a window for Kansas City’s third-down and receiving back, Samaje Perine, who has averaged 20 receiving yards over his last five outings.
In a cold-weather matchup that could see the short game emphasized, Perine’s role in the short passing game might become pivotal.
Super Bowl Matchup Rating: Yellow
Super Bowl Matchups: Wide Receivers
Below, we’ll highlight a WR vs. CB matchup in the Super Bowl for each team.
Eagles WR DeVonta Smith vs. Chiefs CB Chamarri Conner
Chiefs CB Chamarri Conner projects as the weakest link in either secondary for the Super Bowl. During the regular season, Conner allowed a near-100 passer rating and surrendered 53 receptions, the 20th-most in the league, per PFF. His postseason coverage grade shows a modest improvement — 34th out of 62 cornerbacks — compared to a regular-season rank of 80th among 223.
Lining up primarily in the slot, Conner faces a formidable assignment in Eagles WR DeVonta Smith, who ranks top 10 in receiving touchdowns this year and boasts a 125 passer rating when targeted, along with eight TD receptions.
Super Bowl Matchup Rating: Yellow
Eagles WR Jahan Dotson vs. Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie
Chiefs CB Trent McDuffie has emerged as one of the premier cornerbacks in the NFL. He ranks fifth out of 116 corners in coverage, allowing an 87 passer rating and recording two interceptions on the season. In the postseason, he has given up just a handful of receptions, placing him 8th out of 62 cornerbacks.
The former first-round pick will match up against Eagles WR Jahan Dotson, who struggles by comparison — ranking 119th out of 125 wide receivers this season. Dotson has just one catch on two targets for 11 yards across three Playoff games. While he will avoid McDuffie in his slot snaps (33% this year), he will likely run into him and find little success when he runs out wide.
Super Bowl Matchup Rating: Red
Super Bowl Matchups: Tight End
Below, we’ll highlight the TE matchup to target in the Super Bowl.
Eagles TE Dallas Goedert vs. Chiefs
Kansas City fields the league’s worst defense against tight ends, allowing nearly 79 receiving yards per game and about seven receptions to the position, both ranking 32nd in the NFL. Philadelphia TE Dallas Goedert carries a projection of 51 receiving yards.
In two previous encounters with the Chiefs (2023 and 2021), he has averaged 55 receiving yards, and over his last five games, he continues to be a reliable option in the passing attack, with at least 47 yards in each of his last four games.
Goedert missed the last Super Bowl matchup due to injury, so he may be extra motivated to make his impact felt in this game.
Super Bowl Matchup Rating: Green
