AFC Contenders for Super Bowl 2025
We are down to four teams in the left in the AFC as we head into the Divisional Round; just like the regular season, there are still three teams considered as favorites. The Kansas City Chiefs are fresh off a bye week as the No. 1 seed and face the Houston Texans, while the Baltimore Ravens travel to face the Buffalo Bills in a highly-anticipated clash.
Let’s take a look at the AFC contenders for the 2025 Super Bowl.
Kansas City Chiefs (#1 Seed in AFC)
The top seeds in the AFC are fresh and ready to go to face the Houston Texans on Saturday in Kansas City. As the number one seed, they enjoyed a nice week off while everyone else was out battling it out. This extra rest has allowed the likes of Chris Jones and Isaiah Pacheco to come back to practice without too much worry.
Outside of resting their starters against Denver in Week 18, the Chiefs looked excellent against the Texans and Steelers leading into the playoffs. Their offense put up 25-plus points while their defense gave up less than 20.
While their offense hasn't been as explosive as it was in past years, the biggest strength of this team outside of having QB Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid is their defense. Even if you include their Week 18 game where they rested their starters and got hammered by Denver, this is still a top-10 defense in yards allowed and a top-5 defense in points allowed.
The fact that this team has won it before and is looking for history with a three-peat will give them a hunger to push for a third-straight Super Bowl title.
Buffalo Bills (#2 Seed in AFC)
After a 31-7 win over the Denver Broncos, Buffalo’s sights are set on the Baltimore Ravens. This is a rematch of their game earlier in the season where the Ravens throttled them 35-10 in Baltimore. Saturday’s game will be the much-anticipated Josh Allen vs. Lamar Jackson showdown, the two favorites for the MVP.
In their win against the Broncos, outside of the first-drive long touchdown to Troy Franklin, it was a comprehensive performance on both sides of the ball. Josh Allen had 272 yards and 2 touchdowns, and James Cook had 120 yards and a touchdown. In total, they had 471 yards of offense and held Denver to 224 yards, complete domination on both sides of the ball.
Their top-10 offense is what the Bills will use to fuel them if they are to make a run for their first Lombardi Trophy. Allen has had better teams overall than this one, but this one seems to be the one that could finally get over the hump and win an AFC Championship. But some of those holes in the offense and in the rush defense could cause trouble in these final two matchups.
Other AFC Contenders for Super Bowl 2025
Here are more AFC contenders to make the 2025 Super Bowl, including their AFC Playoff seeding.
- #3 Seed Baltimore Ravens — It was once again a Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry masterclass against the Steelers. They’re going to need a performance like that again from both players if they are to defeat the Bills in Buffalo. WR Zay Flowers is in “we’ll see mode” on whether he will play or not Saturday night.
- #4 Seed Houston Texans — After pretty much everyone had counted the Texans out, they put on a defensive masterclass to shut down Justin Herbert and the Chargers. Herbert had more interceptions in this game than he had all year, and they’ll need to keep that pressure up to try and pull off the upset on the Chiefs.
NFC Contenders for Super Bowl 2025
Two NFC East teams remain in the playoffs after a strong defensive performance from the Philadelphia Eagles in a win over the Green Bay Packers. The Washington Commanders pulled off the upset over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, being the only Wild Card team in either conference to win their road game.
Let’s take a look at the NFC contenders for the 2025 Super Bowl.
Detroit Lions (12-2, 1st in NFC)
The Lions are banged up on the defensive side of the ball, but they still have a high-powered offense that teams are going to have trouble stopping. QB Jared Goff, RB Jahmyr Gibbs, WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR Jameson Williams, and TE Sam LaPorta are likely one of the best offensive cores you will see, and the team will likely see the return of RB David Montgomery in the divisional round giving them their “Sonic and Knuckles” 1-2 punch, as he returned to practice on Tuesday.
Like the Chiefs, the much-needed rest this week will help them immensely as they look to get some players back healthy for this playoff run. The Lions boasted the NFC’s best offense and provided a balanced attack in both the pass and run game, ranking inside the top-10 in both.
They open off their playoff campaign against a very dangerous Washington Commanders team in Detroit.
Philadelphia Eagles (12-2, 2nd in NFC)
Despite getting out-gained by the Packers on Sunday, the Eagles seemed to be in control of the game the whole way through. They forced three interceptions on Packers QB Jordan Love, and immediately stole the momentum after recovering a fumble on the opening kickoff return.
Hurts’ return was the biggest news of the week for Eagles fans after missing him for the last three weeks due to a concussion. The Eagles did however lose linebacker Nakobe Dean for the rest of the playoffs due to a torn patellar tendon in his knee.
Hurts is looking to lead his team to a second Super Bowl appearance after leading the Eagles to the Super Bowl in 2023. Hurts is part of the number two overall rushing offense in the league, paired up with the dynamic Saquon Barkley, allowing the Eagles to be one of the more balanced attacks in the NFL. The biggest strength of this Eagles team though is this defense.
After a shaky start to the year, this Vic Fangio-led defense finished with the least yards allowed and second in scoring defense. Despite the loss of Dean, the Eagles still have defensive weapons all over the field that will make them quite a formidable opponent.
Other Top NFC Contenders for Super Bowl 2025
Here are more NFC contenders to make the Super Bowl 2025, including their NFC Playoff seeding.
- #4 Los Angeles Rams — The Rams provided a defensive masterclass against the Minnesota Vikings, tying the playoff record for sacks in a playoff game with nine. They will need another amazing defensive performance as they head to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles this week, who they previously gave up 37 points to in the teams' first matchup.
- #6 Washington Commanders — Jayden Daniels became the 12th quarterback to lead his team to a playoff win in his rookie year. That victory ended a winless playoff drought for the Commanders that lasted since 2005. They head to Detroit to face the top-seeded Lions next.
Super Bowl 2025 Prediction: Ravens defeat Lions
The path to the Super Bowl on the AFC side still runs through Arrowhead Stadium, but this is the most vulnerable Chiefs team in some time. Their play in games is not really pronounced in their 15-2 record, with many of those early wins coming by one possession. However, the Ravens are firing on all cylinders at the right time with one of the worst defenses in the league for a majority of the season finishing top-10 in yards allowed.
The Lions should be able to take it one step further this year after losing in the NFC Championship game last year. The extra year of experience as well as getting some key players back for this playoff run will fuel them to their first Super Bowl appearance. It will be Baltimore, though, who will take it, giving them their 3rd Super Bowl victory.
