November 2, 2024 — Ole Miss vs. Arkansas

All of Dart’s best attributes were on display in this game, which became the best performance of his collegiate career as Ole Miss up 63 points. In this game, he came away with a career-high 515 passing yards, six touchdowns, a 284.1 quarterback rating, and 16.6 yards per attempt.

He’s had a couple of other games with a better completion rate, but this is the one where we also saw him hit big throws, and was the best command of an offense we saw from him at Ole Miss.

Jaxson Dart Scouting Report

Here are the strengths and weaknesses of Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart that could translate to the NFL.

Strengths

  • Incredibly accurate passer, finished last season with a SEC-leading 69.3% completion rate and 65.7% in three years at Ole Miss.
  • Great decision-maker who doesn’t try to force throws.
  • Improved at limiting interceptions, going from 11 picks in his first season at Ole Miss to 11 in his final two seasons.
  • Has a technically sound throwing motion and has a quick release.
  • He’s adaptable in a lot of different offenses and can lead a team downfield in an up-tempo offense.
  • Disguises QB-run design plays and gains large yardage.
  • Stays poised in RPO — which has become increasingly relevant in the NFL — and can make reads quickly.

Weaknesses

  • Still learning how to look off defenders and gives away a lot of interceptions when he telegraphs his intended receiver.
  • Doesn’t trust his protection enough and will bail out of play too early instead of allowing his receivers to get open.
  • Can struggle with the deep ball, posing questions about his arm strength — which is one of the instances where he strays from his mechanics.
  • Likes to look for the big play rather than settle for the easier throw or go to his check down.

Jaxson Dart NFL Comparison: Kirk Cousins

It’s not only the fact that Kirk Cousins and Dart are similar physically, but they have a similar play style. Their throwing motions are identical, each with a short motion and quick release.

Cousins has been one of the more consistent quarterbacks during his career thanks to his approach, preparation, and mechanics, and Dart has these similar traits.

The consistency and accuracy make up for the lack of a confidently strong arm, and Cousins only averages 7.7 yards per attempt for his career. He has made four Pro Bowls but has never been in the MVP conversation, and that could be a similar path for Dart.

Dart does have the added bonus of his rushing ability, as he rushed for 568 yards last year at Ole Miss, while Cousins has never rushed for more than 180 yards in an NFL season.

Jaxson Dart NFL Draft Projection

Dart has benefitted from being a full-time starter over the last three years, especially in a tough conference like the SEC. He’ll also have an easier adjustment to the pro style as he played in something similar at Ole Miss thanks to being coach by a former NFL head coach in Lane Kiffin.

Those skills are why teams are falling in love with him and why his stock has steadily risen from the start of the Senior Bowl. He doesn’t have the athleticism of some of the other top quarterback prospects in the draft, but the passing aspect is something that is on par with his constituents.

We could see Dart in a similar situation as Bo Nix last year: the Broncos unexpectedly traded up to the No. 8 pick to ensure they got Nix. With the buzz of several teams liking Dart, including some in the top ten, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we saw a team make an aggressive move and trade up to land Dart.

At this point, it seems more likely than not that Dart will go in the first round.
