#19 Army vs. #6 Notre Dame: Time, How to Watch

Date: Saturday, November 23, 2024
Time: 7 p.m. ET
Location: Yankee Stadium, New York, NY
TV: NBC, streaming on Peacock

College football is great when Army is a competitive team, and they are very much so this year. It’s been a long time since they were considered a National Championship-potential program, but sitting undefeated at 9-0, a signature win this week would help.

Notre Dame doesn’t have the benefit of playing in a conference, so the quality of opponents is important in this new 12-team playoff structure. They already have a bad loss against a non-power conference opponent (Northern Illinois); a second would end their playoff hopes.

Though this game is being played in Yankee Stadium, closer to Army, it is a Notre Dame home game, and Notre Dame has a larger ticket allotment. That said, this stadium likely won’t lend itself to much of a home-field advantage for the Irish.

Notre Dame RB Jeremiyah Love 73.5 Rushing Yards — More

Notre Dame has dominated their opponents on the ground, keeping them on their heels. The tandem of RB Jeremiyah Love and QB Riley Leonard has been hard to contain as it ranks 11th with 216.7 rushing yards per game.

Don’t compare Notre Dame’s performance against another service academy program and expect the same results; Navy allows 4.5 yards per carry, while Army allows just 3.2, which is the ninth-best in the country.

The only other top-25 rushing defenses they’ve faced are Texas A&M and Northern Illinois, and Love went for over 75 yards in each game. It might be a grind, but he’ll get his yards in a grind-it-out game.

Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard 201.5 Passing Yards — Less

When QB Riley Leonard transferred from Duke, the Irish were hoping to get a dual-threat quarterback. It took some time, but it might finally be coming together. After failing to throw for 200 yards in his first five games, he’s done it in four of his last five.

The Black Knights are 32nd in passing yards allowed per game (191.3) and even better in yards allowed per completion (9.21), where they rank second. They don’t face many passing attempts, but their 14 interceptions show how much teams prefer to stay on the ground against them.

We mentioned there was one recent game where Leonard didn’t throw for over 200 yards — that was against Navy. Leonard will throw occasionally to try to open up the run game, but it will involve a lot of RPOs to keep Army off balance. Either they’ll run, or Leonard will make short passes to limit mistakes.

Army QB Bryson Daily 86.5 Rushing Yards — More

Army lives and thrives in the triple-option offense. For many years, this strategy, along with their defense, has kept games close and low-scoring. However, the Black Knights have become one of the more explosive teams, now averaging 419 yards per game (45th in the nation).

Army quarterback Bryson Daily has only attempted 172 passes in two years — some quarterbacks do that in half a season. However, he is an effective runner and ranks 14th in the nation in rushing yards (1,062).

Notre Dame boasts one of the top rush defenses, but Army’s offense is built around athletic offensive linemen who can block, open gaps, and support their runners. This could take the Irish by surprise.

Army RB Kanye Udoh 16.5 Longest Rush — More

What makes Army tough to stop is that Daily often looks like he’s running, only to throw a screen, slant, or quick toss to Kanye Udoh. This unpredictability allows him to break off long plays. He has a run of 40 or more yards in four of his last six games and averages 3.4 yards after contact.

Getting Udoh going is going to be key to winning this game, and he’s gone more than this number in five of nine games this season.
