How does the Swiss Stage Work?

In Round 1 of the Swiss Stage, teams are paired against teams from a different region. You can see the Round 1 matchups below.

In each following round, teams are seeded based on win-loss record. For example, in the two matches on Saturday, Oct. 5, only the four 2-0 teams will play to determine who advances to the Knockout Stage; on Sunday, the eight 1-1 teams will play; and on Monday, the four 0-2 teams will play to determine two teams who are eliminated.

The draws for these matchups are random (outside of the same-record pairing) and will happen after the completion of each stage.

All matches are best of 1 map, unless it is an advancement or elimination match, which are best of 3 maps.

LoL Worlds Swiss Stage Opening Round Matchups

Bilibili Gaming vs. MAD Lions

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 8 a.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: Elk vs. Supa in Bot lane

Prediction: Bilibili Gaming wins, 1-0

MAD Lions coasted through the Group Stage with a 2-0 win over Vikings, then 2-1 over PSG, who later qualified. But they’re considered huge underdogs here against the LPL Champions from China. Before Worlds, MAD lost 3-1 to G2, and 3-2 to Fnatic. They’re no match here.

Top Esports vs. T1

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 9 a.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: Creme vs. Faker in Mid lane

Prediction: Top Esports wins, 1-0

This should be the closest match of the first round. Top Esports comes into Worlds in much better form than T1, which was the last team into Worlds. Top was second in regular season points, then defeated LNG 3-0 in the LPL Summer Playoffs, before dropping matches to Bilibili and Weibo.

Meanwhile, T1 has dropped two matches to Hanwha Life and another to Dplus in LCK leading up to Worlds. They were fourth in the LCK Summer regular season, going just 11-7.

It’s worth noting that T1 defeated Top Esports in the Esports World Cup Grand Final on July 7, 3-1. But until we see T1 defeat a Championship-caliber team, it’s hard to pick them.

Weibo Gaming vs. Gen.G

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 10 a.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: Xiaohu vs. Chovy in Mid lane

Prediction: Gen.G wins, 1-0

Gen.G dropped a very close LCK Summer Playoffs final to Hanwha Life, but there’s no doubt that they’re still one of the best teams in the world. It wouldn’t be surprising to see them go 3-0 and into the Knockout Stage in this first weekend.

Meanwhile, Weibo has looked poor in the Summer split. While they took 2nd in the LPL Summer Playoffs, they went 0-3 twice vs. Bilibili there, lost 0-3 to LNG in the Regional Finals, and barely squeaked by JD Gaming to secure their spot here.

Fnatic vs. Dplus

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 11 a.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: Humanoid vs. ShowMaker in Mid lane

Prediction: Dplus wins, 1-0

Fnatic has been disappointing when facing tough competition, and that’s what they’ll run into in the first round. At MSI, they dropped matches to Gen. G, Top, and Team Liquid. At the LEC Summer Finals, they barely beat MAD, and were outclassed by G2, losing 3-1.

Dplus defeated T1 in a very close match to earn their spot here, after losing their previous seven matches to Faker’s side. That could mark a turning point for this team, as they closed the LCK Summer split strongly.

Team Liquid vs. LNG

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 12 p.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: APA vs. Scout in Mid lane

Prediction: LNG wins, 1-0

If there was an Eastern team that Liquid has the potential to upset, it’s probably LNG, who comes into this match after recent losses to Top and Weibo in the LPL Summer Playoffs.

However, the 3-1 loss to FlyQuest in the LCS Summer Final doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence in this team. They did, however, play T1 close a few months ago at the Esports World Cup.

In one map, anything can happen. If you’re picking an upset, roll with Liquid, but they’re certainly an underdog against this team.

PSG Talon vs. Hanwha Life

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 1 p.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: Betty vs. Viper in Bot lane

Prediction: Hanwha Life wins, 1-0

There isn’t much to say here. This Hanwha Life should handle PSG with no issue. The best thing on PSG’s resume is their 2-3 loss to Bilibili at MSI 2024 — taking two maps off one of the favorites in this tournament is impressive.

However, although they beat 100 Thieves to get here, they dropped a match to MAD Lions along the way. Hanwha life is coming off wins over T1 and Gen.G to become the LCK Summer Champions. They’ll ride that hot streak here and have a chance to go 3-0 in the Swiss Stage.

FlyQuest vs. GAM

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 2 p.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: Bwipo vs. Kiaya in Top lane

Prediction: FlyQuest wins, 1-0

FlyQuest gets a generous draw in GAM in Round 1 of the Swiss Stage. Last month, FlyQuest defeated Liquid, 3-1, to earn their spot here. Although GAM picked up two 2-0 wins in the Group Stage, the Vietnamese side is outmatched by the competition in this Swiss Stage.

Last year at Worlds, GAM were quickly eliminated, followed by their 9-10th place at MSI 2024, where they lost 2-0 to Fnatic. Expect a similar result here.

paIN vs. G2

Date: Thursday, Oct. 3

Time: 3 p.m. ET

How to Watch: The Esports Lab

Matchup to Watch: dyNquedo vs. Caps in Mid lane

Prediction: G2 wins, 1-0

G2 is the best team in Europe right now. They’re coming off wins in the Summer Playoffs and Season Finals, handling Fnatic easily in both. Of any Western team, G2 is the side to look out for.

G2 disappointed at MSI, dropping out with a 0-3 loss to T1 in the semifinals. That said, paIN is a Brazilian side that has never played at this level before. Their last international appearance was MSI in 2021. It would be shocking to see them pull off this upset.
