WNBA Picks for PrizePicks Today: October 4
- Sun F Alyssa Thomas 17.5 Rebs + Assists — More
- Lynx F Napheesa Collier 20 Points — Less
- Aces C A’ja Wilson 24 Points — Less
- Liberty G Sabrina Ionescu 2.5 3-Pointers Made — More (Goblin)
Connecticut Sun F Alyssa Thomas 17.5 Rebs + Asts — MORE
Sun forward Alyssa Thomas is the do-it-all forward for the Sun and the engine that is the key to the team’s success. So far in the series, Thomas leads Connecticut in both rebounds and assists, averaging 10 rebounds and 8 assists in the first two games of the series.
With their first home game in the semifinals, she will need to be the spark for the team in what has been a defensive showdown so far.
Neither team has shot better than 45 percent from the field in the first two games and do not expect anything different in Game 3 featuring the league’s two best defensive teams.
Thomas has cleared this projection in three of five meetings this season and just missed by one during Game 2. Another near triple-double for Thomas would put the Sun in prime position to pick up another win in the series.
Minnesota Lynx F Napheesa Collier 20.5 Points — LESS
Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has struggled so far in this series to get going against the Sun. She had two stellar regular season performances against Connecticut where she scored 25 and 31 points with efficient shooting. That has come crashing down so far in their semifinal showdown, averaging only 14 points.
The Sun have prioritized getting the ball out of Collier’s hands as much as possible and forcing her teammates to make big plays. When she does get it, they are making sure a lengthy defender is on her.
The 2024 Defensive Player of the Year is only shooting 33 percent from the field in the semifinals thanks to the adjustments made by the Sun.
Things will not get easier for her on the road in a hostile environment.
Las Vegas Aces C A’ja Wilson 24 Points — LESS
Since Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones joined the New York Liberty in 2023, there have been evident scoring struggles for Las Vegas Aces center A'ja Wilson. If it’s not Jones as the primary defender on Wilson, the Liberty can easily switch Stewart on to her.
In 12 meetings against this rendition of the Liberty, this year’s unanimous MVP has gone less than 24 points in eight of those games. Another three times, she has tied the projection.
Six of those meetings were in the playoffs where her 26-point game in Game 2 of the 2023 WNBA Finals was her only time clearing this 24-point projection.
Wilson was well on pace to go less than 24 in Game 2, but turned it up in the second half to hit after scoring a mid-range jumper late in the game. It’s just a defensive nightmare for Wilson in this matchup which is why it has been so difficult for her to make waves against New York.
New York Liberty G Sabrina Ionescu 2.5 3-Pointers Made — MORE (Goblin)
Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu has shown her star power so far in these playoffs, stepping up in big moments where she would previously defer to her MVP-winning teammates in Stewart and Jones.
She delivered the big shots or the right play every time the Aces seemed to have landed a momentum-changing play during the fourth quarter of Game 2.
Despite the growth in her playmaking and inside shooting, she still poses a lethal threat from her three-point shooting. After shooting a career-high 44 percent from three last year, her percentage dropped off this year significantly to 33 percent.
She’s found her spark once again this playoffs with her percentage of 42 percent.
She has cleared this goblin projection 8-of-13 times against the Aces and will need another solid shooting outing if New York wants to sweep the two-time defending champions.
Note: Goblin picks decrease your payout on PrizePicks, as they are easier projections to hit.
