Dodgers P Dustin May — 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed

It will be two years since Dustin May has pitched in the regular season, and he has gone through a lot of adversity to get to this point. Last year, while almost fully recovered from Tommy John surgery, he was out eating when he swallowed some food that tore his esophagus, which could have resulted in death.

That took another year away from May, but he’s back today.

He will face the stone-cold Braves, who scored just one run in the last three games. May will not likely have a long outing, which could mean the Braves won’t have a chance to make adjustments the first time through the order in May’s first appearance of the season.

Astros P Hayden Wesneski – 1.5 Walks (Goblin)

Astros pitcher Hayden Wesneski has only made spot starts throughout his career, but with some departures from this Astros rotation, he might be locked into the role throughout the season.

He’s not an overpowering pitcher, but he will get you to make weaker contact and average a 6.6% weak contact rate, well above the 3.9% league average. His one problem is control, and a well-disciplined team can lay off those pitches down in the zone.

That’s what the Giants did in Wesneski’s start last year, and he allowed a career-high four walks. The Giants were great at taking free bases, and their 8.1 walk percentage was 13th last year.

Mets OF Juan Soto – 2.5 Total Bases (Demon)

A lot of attention will be on Mets OF Juan Soto at the beginning of the year, and the critics will examine every at-bat due to the large investment the Mets have in him. Starting the season batting .308 with a home run and two RBI isn’t terrible, but it may not be $765 million great.

He’ll go against Marlins righty Sandy Alcantara, whom he has seen plenty of times with his previous stint in the National League West. Soto has a career .289 batting average (11-for-38), with two home runs and five RBI against him. Alcantara is returning to form after missing all of last year recovering from Tommy John's surgery, and he could struggle against a good lineup with Soto.

Mariners 2B Jorge Polanco – 1.5 Total Bases (Demon)

Jorge Polanco’s first season in Seattle could not have gone any worse as he finished with a career-low .213 batting average and 29.3% strikeout rate. It looks like he worked on himself in the offseason because started hot with a .400 average and 1.000 OPS.

This could be another spot for him going against Casey Mize, who he’s 5-for-14 with two of those hits being home runs.

Home Run Pick: Yankees OF Aaron Judge (Demon)

The Yankees are getting all the attention with the offensive clinic they put on over the weekend. 36 runs and 15 home runs. It’s almost like they were shooting that ball out of the zone like a torpedo, breaking records along the way.

This is one of those instances where you ignore the history and back a hot bat. OF Aaron Judge is locked in and already has four home runs and 11 RBI. He’s going against Corbin Burnes, who was in the American League East last season and saw the Yankees a couple of times. Judge does not have any success off Burnes, going 0-for-7, but with how Judge is hitting, you can’t ignore him, especially with the friendly dimensions of Yankee Stadium.
