What is “Suga” Sean O'Malley's record?

If you ask the UFC, Suga Sean O’Malley is 18-1. But O’Malley still maintains the “zero” in the loss column, at 18-0. But why?

O’Malley’s disputed 1 in the loss record came at the hands of Marlon Chito Vera during UFC 252 in August of 2020. In the loss, O’Malley said a leg injury hindered his movement, which led to Vera finishing O’Malley in the first round.

This loss ended a 12-fight win streak as a professional, and has since been followed up by six straight wins, including a unanimous decision victory in a rematch with the aforementioned Vera.

Who is “Suga” Sean O’Malley? Height, Weight, & Age

Suga Sean O’Malley is the current UFC Bantamweight Champion out of Phoenix, Arizona. O’Malley is ranked as the No. 4 fighter in the UFC, pound-for-pound, according to ESPN.

Suga Sean Record: 18-1 (1 NC)*

Suga Sean Weight: 135 lbs. (Bantamweight)

Suga Sean Height: 5-foot-11

Suga Sean Reach: 72-inches

After making his first UFC outing in Dana White's contender series, Suga Sean has looked like the star White believed he could be after that night.

Since then he’s added iconic face tattoos and colorful hair to his look, while transforming into one of the faces of the UFC brand. In just seven years time, O’Malley went from fighting for a UFC roster spot, to now having headlined three title fights.

Why does Suga Sean O’Malley not count his loss?

At the height of the pandemic, O’Malley and Vera faced off as the co-main for UFC 252. The first few minutes of the fight, O’Malley looked sharp as ever.

Then, barely two minutes into the fight, Vera landed a low kick on O'Malley's right leg that clearly affected him. O’Malley reacted strangely for what would appear to just be a typical leg kick, and staggered backwards.

Viewers at home began to think it may have something to do with his wrapped ankles, as he had injured his right foot the fight before. But O’Malley began to drag his foot and leg, something you wouldn’t see if a fighter was in pain from the blow.

Vera soon noticed the apparent injury, and turned up the pressure. Then, with just over 30 seconds left in the first round, O'Malley stumbled to the ground after throwing a punch. Vera seized the moment and began landing some nasty elbows and punches from top control.

Attempting to stop O’Malley from taking any more unnecessary damage, referee Herb Dean called a stop to the bout via TKO.

After the fight, it became known that the kick in question hit O’Malleys peroneal nerve, leaving him temporarily incapable of lifting his ankle and toes. While the odds of this happening are insanely low, this in combination with O’Malleys prior Lisfranc injury potentially being reinjured, led to the perfect storm of his entire right leg becoming non-functioning.

According to O’Malley the “Suga State Athletic Commission” overturned the decision. While obviously joking, it is clear O’Malley still does not view it as a true loss, often tweeting about being undefeated and throwing up the zero pre-fight. His own thinking and beliefs aside, the UFC has kept his official record at the one loss.

When is Suga Sean’s Next Fight?

Suga Sean O’Malley’s next fight is scheduled for September 14 as the main event on the UFC 306 PPV card, in a bout against Merab Dvalishvili. Unlike any prior UFC event, this one takes place in the Las Vegas Sphere

Hailing as the most expensive venue in all of Vegas, this 366 feet high by 516 feet wide spectacle might be the most unique place the UFC has ever visited.

Who does Suga Sean O’Malley fight next?

O’Malley’s next bout is the main event of the evening against the dangerous Merab Dvalishvili. Merab has not lost since 2018 and has rattled off ten straight wins — nine decisions, one TKO — following the loss in UFC Fight Night. The ten-fight win streak by Merab was no cake walk either, with impressive wins over the likes of Jose Aldo, Petr Yan, and Henry Cejudo.

What does PrizePicks claim O’Malleys record is?

While we may be a little biased, we don’t think the loss against Vera should count. A freak accident causing drop foot is no way to end the undefeated streak. That’s why leading up to UFC 306 we are Protecting the Zero for our members!
