Packers DE Preston Smith to the Packers

The Packers were expected to move DE Preston Smith before today's Trade Deadline, and they found their trade partner in the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers are sending a seventh-round pick to the Packers for Smith, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Smith is 31 years old and was one of the Packers' largest contracts on the books, with $12 million this year and $12.6 million next year. Smith has just 6 tackles sand 2.5 sacks in nine games this year, but has at least 8 sacks in each of his last three seasons.

Steelers Trade for Jets WR Mike Williams

The Steelers have found their new WR ahead of the NFL Trade Deadline. The Steelers are trading for Jets WR Mike Williams in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick.

Williams fell out of favor in New York after the Davante Adams trade, followed by his game-ending blunder against the Bills which led to an interception. He was playing as the WR3 behind Garrett Wilson and Adams, with only two catches across the last three games.

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers reacted to the trade live on the Pat McAfee Show.

The 30-year-old Williams had 12 receptions for 166 yards with the Jets. He's previously recorded two 1,000-yard receiving seasons with the Chargers in 2019 and 2021 and has shown glimmers of becoming a star, but injuries in 2022 and an ACL tear in 2023 put his career on a downward trajectory.

Williams will slot in for WR Van Jefferson opposite WR1 George Pickens, with Calvin Austin III emerging as the team's slot receiver. Jefferson will play in rare four-wide sets and back-up both Picks and Williams.

Williams will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season.

Saints CB Marshon Lattimore Traded to Commanders

Saints CB Marshon Lattimore is being traded to the Washington Commanders, who were expected to be buyers at the trade deadline. Many other teams were pushing for Lattimore, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury, including the Chiefs, Ravens, and Chargers.

Here are the full details of the Marshon Lattimore trade.

Commanders receive: Lattimore + Saints 2025 fifth-round pick

Saints receive: Commanders 2025 third-round pick + 2025 fourth-round pick + get back their 2025 sixth-round pick from the DT John Ridgeway trade

This season, Lattimore is the 15th-highest graded CB on PFF out of 56 eligible players who have played at least 400 snaps in 2024. He will bring much needed CB help to the Commanders, whose biggest vulnerability has been their pass defense this year.

Long-time Saints reporter Nick Underhill reported that the Saints would be willing to let him go for a high third-round pick. Notably, the Commanders have an extra third-round pick from the Jahan Dotson trade, which adds up.

Schefter: Seahawks not Trading WR DK Metcalf

Some rumors have surfaced of the Steelers targeting Seahawks WR DK Metcalf, among other receivers, as they look for a WR2 ahead of the deadline. That was a pipe dream. Today, Schefter shut down any speculation, saying the Seahawks will not be trading Metcalf, their star receiver.

Any speculation was a long-shot anyways; it’s incredibly rare to see a receiver of Metcalf’s caliber and age be moved, especially with the Seahawks still in the NFC Wild Card race at 4-5.

Cowboys Trade for WR Jonathan Mingo

The 3-5 Cowboys were expected to become sellers at the trade deadline, as they’re placing QB Dak Prescott (hamstring) on IR, keeping him out through at least Week 13. Instead, they’ve decided to overpay for a back-up WR on the worst team in the league.

The Cowboys sent a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Panthers in exchange for WR Jonathan Mingo and a 2025 seventh-round pick on Tuesday morning. Keep in mind, three top NFL receivers have been traded for less — or slightly more — during this trade deadline already.

Mingo was a second-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss, where he never had a 1,000-yard receiving season in four years. In the NFL, he’s totaled 55 catches, 539 yards, and no touchdowns.

Mingo has an abysmal 44.4% catch rate this season on 27 targets — the worst on the team, and has recently fallen out of favor in Carolina as David Moore and undrafted rookie Jalen Coker have taken over WR2 duties alongside star rookie Xavier Legette.

Mingo will share time at WR2 in Dallas once he’s accustomed to the playbook, sharing time with Jalen Tolbert and Jalen Brooks opposite CeeDee Lamb.

Lions Trade for DE Za’Darius Smith

The Browns agreed to send DE Za’Darius Smith to the Lions for 2025 fifth- and sixth-round picks. The Lions also received a 2026 seventh-round pick.

The Lions are one of the most complete rosters in the NFL, but season-ending injuries to DE Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport have left them with little to no pass-rush on their defensive line. It was a foregone conclusion that they would go out and pick up a pass rusher.

Smith is a veteran pass-rusher, a three-time Pro Bowler who now lands on his fifth NFL team. Smith has 65 career sacks, including five sacks over nine games this year.

He’s not the force he once was, but he will add much needed support on the defensive line as the Lions look poised to make a Super Bowl run in January.

Bengals Trade for RB Khalil Herbert

The Bengals added some RB depth at the NFL Trade Deadline. The Bears sent No. 3 RB Khalil Herbert to the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick.

Herbert only has 8 carries for 16 yards this year, as he was behind D'Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson on the depth chart. However, he's shown promise since he joined the league as a sixth-round pick in 2021, averaging 4.8 yards per carry on 372 carries with the Bears.

Herbert had over 100 carries in each of the last three season, and was always a more than serviceable back, with five 100-yard rushing games. He also can contribute in the pass game, as he has 45 career receptions, averaging 6.5 yards per receptions.

It wouldn't be surprising to see Herbert emerge as the RB1 in Cincinnati before year's end. RB Chase Brown has been underwhelming as a running, with 479 yards in nine games, while backup RB Zack Moss is averaging just 3.3 yards per carry on 74 carries.

What Trades Happened Before the NFL Trade Deadline?

Surprisingly, there have been a few big trades leading up to the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline.

The Panthers sent WR Diontae Johnson and a sixth-round pick to the Ravens for a fourth-round pick to bolster their WR corps.

The Chiefs traded for WR DeAndre Hopkins from the Titans — who had his coming out party on Monday Night Football — and pass-rusher Josh Uche from the Patriots.

The Raiders traded star WR Davante Adams to the Jets for a third-round pick. Adams has started the last three games for the Jets, reuniting with QB Aaron Rodgers.

The Bills added WR Amari Cooper from the Browns. The Bills received Cooper and a 2025 sixth-round pick in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and 2026 seventh-round pick.

The Jaguars moved DE Roy Robertson-Harris to the Seahawks, who got some DL help, and OT Cam Robinson to the Vikings. They may continue to be sellers at the trade deadline, with RB Travis Etienne rumored as a trade target for some teams.
