Cam Ward: Strengths
- High-level football IQ that helps him recognize coverage at the line of scrimmage and make pre-snap adjustments, which has resulted in a high level of success.
- Strong arm that allows him to exploit holes 20+ yards down the sideline or middle of the field.
- Highly accurate for someone of his arm strength. He is able to hit tight windows on slants and fades while hitting receivers in stride on vertical routes.
- Led Miami to one of the most explosive offenses in the country, with frequent 20-plus-yard completions.
- Mobility allows him to extend plays in the pocket, or he can take off for positive yards, though he is not considered a true dual-threat QB.
- Intangibles to stay calm in pressure situations. He helped lead Miami to several comebacks during the season — a plus for NFL teams looking for a leader
Cam Ward Weaknesses
- Tends to get risky sometimes and will throw into double and triple coverage.
- While great at throwing against man coverage, he has struggled to recognize zone coverage, and the majority of his interceptions have come when he doesn't look off zone defenders. He’ll sometimes throw across the field in those situations.
- Sometimes likes to throw sidearm, but it tends to be inaccurate, though this could be cleaned up in the pros.
- Plays with “happy feet,” which doesn’t keep him stable in his pocket.
Cam Ward NFL Comparison: Steve McNair
Similar to McNair, Ward's size and strength allow him to stay upright in the pocket and shed pass rushers. However, both quarterbacks have the mobility to move around in the pocket, take off, and use their legs to convert a positive.
McNair also had one of the strongest arms in the league, and Ward’s Division 1-leading 9.5 yards per attempt shows he can sling the ball.

NFL Draft Projection: Will Ward go 1st Overall?
If we compare him to McNair, why not put Ward on his former team? The Titans currently hold the No. 1 overall pick, and Ward is projected as the top overall prospect. NFL free agency only confirmed that the Titans are gearing up to take a QB in the NFL Draft — and signs point to Ward being that guy.
Tennessee has recently drafted two quarterbacks. They drafted Malik Willis in 2021, but he failed to gain any momentum and was traded in 2024. Now he’s a backup in Green Bay. In 2023, they picked Will Levis with the No. 33 pick, but these last two seasons, he’s had mixed results, and there are suspicions the Titans want to go in a different direction.
If the Titans decide to roll with Levis, they could potentially trade down, but it may only be as far as No. 3 with the Giants or one spot down to the Browns.
If the Titans decide to keep the pick and not go with a quarterback — which would likely be Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter, Ward could find his way to Cleveland or the New York Giants.
With Ward being the clear top quarterback for most, he will not drop below the top three with so many teams looking for their franchise QB.
