Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is making a strong case to become the American League Cy Young this season. He has been especially dominant against left-handed hitters, allowing just a 5% barrel rate, a 25% hard-hit percentage, and a 17% flyball rate in 125+ plate appearances.
Skubal heavily relies on his sinker and slider, which have been particularly effective.
Guardians left-handed hitter Steven Kwan faces a tough matchup against Skubal. This season, Kwan has struggled against left-handed sliders, with 0% barrel rate, a 33% ground ball rate, and only a 5% hard-hit percentage in 30+ plate appearances.
Against the sinker, Kwan has similarly unimpressive numbers, with a 44% ground ball rate and just a 4% barrel rate. Given these metrics, Kwan is in for a difficult day at the plate against Skubal’s dominant pitching.
Yankees P Carlos Rodón 1.5 Earned Runs Allowed — More (Goblin)
Time: 7:35 p.m. ET
New York Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón has struggled significantly this season. In 740 plate appearances, Rodón has allowed a 10% barrel rate, a 47% hard-hit percentage, and an alarming 35% flyball rate.
These numbers have worsened in his recent starts, where over his last 95 plate appearances, he’s allowed a 16% barrel rate and a 45% hard-hit percentage.
Much of his issues comes from his reliance on the fastball, which he throws over 48% of the time to right-handed hitters. His secondary pitches, including the slider (used 21% of the time) and changeup (used 20%), have also been ineffective against righties.
Ródon is projected to face eight righties in the lineup today, including Bobby Witt Jr., Salvador Perez, Tommy Pham, and Hunter Renfroe. He’s also given up at least two earned runs in four of his last six starts.
Royals SS Bobby Witt Jr 2.5 Total Bases — More (Demon)
Royals RF Hunter Renfroe 0.5 Total Bases — More (Goblin)
Time: 7:35 p.m. ET
We’ll combo these picks together, as several Kansas City Royals right-handed hitters are in a prime position to exploit this matchup versus Rodón. Bobby Witt Jr. has excelled against left-handed pitchers this season, posting a 30% barrel rate, a 54% hard-hit percentage, and a 43% flyball rate in 45+ plate appearances.
Additionally, outfielder Hunter Renfroe has a 31% flyball rate, a 44% hard-hit percentage, and a 12% barrel rate against lefty fastballs, while Paul DeJong, the Royals’ newest addition, has a 37% flyball rate and a 50% hard-hit percentage in over 40 plate appearances this season.
All three hitters also boast strong metrics against Rodón's secondary pitch, the slider.
Bobby Witt Jr., since last season, has slashed lefty sliders with a 34% flyball rate, a 65% hard-hit percentage, and a 17% barrel rate in 35+ plate appearances. Hunter Renfroe, in 30+ plate appearances, has an even better 48% flyball rate, an 86% hard-hit percentage, and a 14% barrel rate. Paul DeJong, in 25 plate appearances, has a 50% flyball rate, a 70% hard-hit percentage, and a 10% barrel rate against the lefty slider.
Given Rodón’s struggles in allowing elevated, hard contact to right-handed hitters, and with several Royals hitters boasting excellent metrics against both his fastball and slider, this matchup could heavily favor Kansas City’s right-handed bats.
Note: Demon picks add a payout boost to your lineup on PrizePicks, as they are more difficult projections to hit, while Goblin picks reduce your payout on PrizePicks, as they are easier projections to hit.
