PrizePicks MLB Picks for October 9

Tigers P Alex Cobb 16.5 Fantasy Score — Less

Time: 3:05 p.m. ET

Tigers pitcher Alex Cobb has been out of action for an extended period, with his last start back in August. In his recent starts, Cobb hasn’t exceeded 85 pitches and hasn’t pitched more than six innings in those outings.

As a contact pitcher, Cobb’s strikeout rate this season sits at a low 15%, and he has allowed a 50% hard-hit percentage with a weak 5% swinging strike rate.

This makes Cobb a prime target for the Tigers to wear down off of his injury, potentially forcing an early exit and going less then this projected fantasy score.

Phillies SS Trea Turner 0.5 Total Bases — More (Goblin)

Time: 5:05 p.m. ET

Mets pitcher José Quintana has been spectacular over the last month and into the Playoffs. In the past 30 days, Quintana has limited opponents to a 5% strikeout rate, a 50% hard-hit percentage, and an impressive 11% flyball rate, all while using a steady mix of his three main pitches: the curveball, four-seam fastball, and sinker.

One player on the Phillies who stands out with excellent metrics against Quintana’s three-pitch mix is Trea Turner. This season, Turner has been effective against left-handed fastballs, posting a 38% flyball rate, a 56% hard-hit percentage, and a 10% barrel rate.

Against the sinker, in 30+ plate appearances, Turner has maintained similar numbers, with a 40% flyball rate, a 50% hard-hit percentage, and a 14% barrel rate. What makes Turner unique in this matchup is that no other player on the Phillies has posted greater than a 24% flyball rate against lefty sinkers this season.

Additionally, Turner has shown the ability to handle curveballs. In 15 plate appearances this season, he has posted a 45% flyball rate, a 45% hard-hit percentage, and an 18% barrel rate.

If there’s any Phillies hitter poised to do damage against Quintana, it’s likely to be Trea Turner given his strong performance against all three of Quintana’s main pitches.

Yankees 3B Jazz Chisholm Jr. 0.5 Total Bases — More (Goblin)

Time: 7:08 p.m. ET

Royals pitcher Seth Lugo has struggled significantly in his last 60 plate appearances against left-handed hitters, posting troubling numbers. Lugo is giving up a 15% barrel rate, 44% hard-hit percentage, and a 33% flyball rate.

Lugo, who relies on a three-pitch mix of a fastball, cutter, and curveball, throws these pitches to lefties nearly 60% of the time. Today, Yankees hitters Juan Soto and Jazz Chisholm standout as favorable matchups against Lugo’s repertoire.

Chisholm has been effective against right-handed cutters, boasting a 48% hard-hit percentage and a 16% barrel rate in 40+ plate appearances this season.

Against the fastball, Chisholm maintains a 38% flyball rate, a 56% hard-hit percentage, and a 13% barrel rate, while his numbers against the curveball show a 33% flyball rate, 75% hard-hit percentage, and a 17% barrel rate.

Note: Goblin picks reduce your payout on PrizePicks, as they are easier projections to hit

Yankees LF Juan Soto 1.5 Total Bases — More (Demon)

Time: 7:08 p.m. ET

Juan Soto presents similar metrics to Chisholm against Lugo’s pitch mix. Soto has slashed right-handed fastballs in 140+ plate appearances, posting a 40% flyball rate, a 78% hard-hit percentage, and a 28% barrel rate.

Against the cutter, Soto maintains a 75% hard-hit percentage and a 24% barrel rate in 60+ plate appearances. Lastly, against the curveball, Soto holds a 20% barrel rate and a 65% hard-hit percentage in 25+ plate appearances.

Note: Demon picks add a payout boost to your lineup on PrizePicks, as they are more difficult projections to hit

Royals LF MJ Melendez 1.5 Strikeouts — More (Demon)

Time: 7:08 p.m. ET

Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt has been dominant against left-handed hitters this season, owning a 31.5% strikeout rate in 180+ plate appearances. The key target on the Royals is MJ Melendez, who has struggled against right-handed pitching, holding a 33% strikeout rate in his last 45+ plate appearances.

Schmidt throws his sweeper 30% of the time, and Melendez has posted a 40% strikeout rate against right-handed sweepers in 20+ plate appearances since last season. Additionally, Melendez has a 30% strikeout rate against Schmidt’s knuckle curve in the same span.

Note: Demon picks add a payout boost to your lineup on PrizePicks, as they are more difficult projections to hit.

Padres SS Fernando Tatis Jr 1.5 Total Bases — More

Time: 9:08 p.m. ET

The Los Angeles Dodgers will send out Landon Knack on the mound tonight. Knack has struggled mightily this season, allowing a 15% barrel rate, a 55% hard-hit percentage, and a 47% flyball rate.

Much of Knack’s trouble stems from throwing his fastball over 50% of the time. The San Diego Padres hitters Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill are prime candidates to exploit this.

Tatis has crushed right-handed fastballs, posting a 33% barrel rate, an 89% hard-hit percentage, and a 44% flyball rate in his last 25+ plate appearances. Tatis also performs well against sliders, owning a 17% barrel rate, a 56% hard-hit percentage, and a 30% flyball rate against that pitch.

Padres CF Jackson Merrill 0.5 Total Bases — More (Goblin)

Time: 9:08 p.m. ET

Jackson Merrill, a potential Rookie of the Year candidate, has slashed the fastball with a 15% barrel rate, a 50% hard-hit percentage, and a 45% flyball rate — the highest on the team this season. Against the slider, Merrill boasts an impressive 40% flyball rate, a 73% hard-hit percentage, and greater than a 10% barrel rate in 50+ plate appearances.
